Python API fails to detect Arducam B0559 camera in VS Code on Windows

Hey everyone, I’m trying to get an Arducam B0559 USB camera working with the Python API but I can’t get it detected at all. I’ve been following the official documentation from the Arducam website, but Visual Studio Code just doesn’t see the camera even though it’s physically connected to my laptop via USB. The camera shows up in Windows Device Manager and works fine in AMCap, but when I try to run any Python code to access it, nothing. Has anyone run into something like this before?

Thanks for posting. Before we dig into the Python side, let’s rule out a hardware issue first. A couple of things:

  1. You mentioned AMCap works — can you confirm the video stream looks normal there? If the camera streams fine in AMCap, that tells us the hardware and USB connection are solid, and the problem is somewhere in the software/config layer.

  2. Could you share a few things so I can narrow this down:

  • The link to the specific guide/page you’re following on the Arducam docs site
  • The Python script you’re running (even if it’s just a snippet)
  • The full error message you’re getting — copy/paste the text if possible rather than a screenshot

The fact that it works in AMCap but not in your Python setup is a strong clue.

Thanks for the quick response. Yes, the camera streams perfectly fine in AMCap — clear video, no issues at all. It also shows up correctly in Windows Device Manager, so the hardware side seems fine.

Here’s the guide I’ve been following:
https://docs.arducam.com/USB-Industrial-Camera/Quick-Start-Guide/Software-SDK-and-API-for-Windows/Software-SDK-and-API-for-python-C-C++/?utm_source=chatgpt.com#tutorial

I followed all the steps in that tutorial but VSC still can’t find the camera. I’m on Windows, camera is the B0559 (Arducam 5MP Fixed Focus USB2.0 Camera Evaluation Kit, SKU EK042). The end goal is to eventually run this on Linux at 1280x720@60fps for a machine vision application, but right now I’m just trying to get basic detection working.

Unfortunately I don’t have the exact error message as text — the end user sent me a screenshot of their VSC terminal output. But it’s essentially saying the camera isn’t found or can’t be opened by the SDK.

Okay, I think I can see exactly what’s going on here. You’re using the wrong documentation for your camera module.

The guide you linked is for the USB Industrial Camera EV Kit — that product line uses a completely different SDK and API. Your B0559 is a UVC-compliant camera module, meaning it’s a standard USB Video Class device. They are not compatible with each other’s software stack.

The fact that AMCap works (it uses standard UVC / DirectShow under the hood) but the Industrial Camera SDK doesn’t find anything is the smoking gun here. The SDK you installed simply doesn’t know how to talk to a UVC device.

Here’s the correct guide you should be using instead:
https://docs.arducam.com/UVC-Camera/Appilcation-Note/OpenCV-Python-GStreamer-on-windows/#1-capturing-video-from-uvc-web-camera-on-windows-using-media-foundation

Since the B0559 is a standard UVC camera, you access it through OpenCV’s VideoCapture or similar standard methods — no special Arducam SDK needed. On Windows, the Media Foundation or DirectShow backends will handle it natively. On Linux, you’d use V4L2 or GStreamer pipelines.

Your AMCap test already confirmed the hardware is good — this is purely a documentation mismatch. Give the UVC guide a try and let us know how it goes.
