Pi5 will not detect ArduCam IMX477

  1. Where did you get the camera module(s)? Amazon from Arducam Store

  2. Model number of the product(s)? HQ Cam

  3. What hardware/platform were you working on? Raspberry Pi 5

  4. Instructions you have followed. (link/manual/etc.)
I have tried different orientations of the cable, using Cam0 and Cam1 - also made sure to reflect this in config.txt

  5. Problems you were having? Camera not detected

Any ideas??

Hi @AstraObscura,

Not an expert here, so hopefully @Dion or someone else can chime in, but what is the output of dmesg | grep imx ? That is the first thing I look after booting the pi.

Also, for Pi5, I think the default is cam1, so if you plug into cam1, you only need dtoverlay=imx477, but if you plug into cam0, you would use dtoverlay=imx477,cam0

Looking at your photo, I think the flat flex cable pins in CAM1 on the Pi5 should be facing the ethernet jack, so the blue should be facing the hdmi input side (at least that’s how my cable looks, although I am not using the same camera, I am using a Pi5). I am not sure what direction the pins should be facing in your imx477 camera module though. On my imx519, the blue faces the front (lens side) of the camera module.

Sorry if anything incorrect above, your mileage may vary!

Okay, let’s troubleshoot the camera connection issue. It seems there might be a common misunderstanding regarding the correct cable orientation and the appropriate port on the Raspberry Pi 5. Let’s go through the correct steps:

  • Step 1: Verify the Port and Cable Orientation on the Raspberry Pi 5 You mentioned trying both CAM0 and CAM1. Please note you are using the CAM0 port(yes, it’s actually the CAM0 port instead of CAM 1 port) on the Raspberry Pi 5 for your camera module. For proper connection, the metal pins on the flex cable must face towards the Ethernet port side of the Pi 5. Consequently, the blue side of the flex cable should be visible and facing towards the HDMI port side when fully inserted into the CAM0 connector.
  • Step 2: Check the Cable Connection on the Camera Module At the camera module end, the orientation is reversed compared to the Pi. The metal contacts on the flex cable should face away from the green camera board. When inserted into the camera module’s connector, the blue plastic side of the cable should be against the green camera board itself. After inserting the cable into both the Pi 5 and the camera module, gently close the latch on each connector to secure it. Please take a close look to ensure the cable is fully seated and the metal contacts are properly aligned with the connector pins.
  • Step 3: Adjust the Software Configuration (Device Tree Overlay) Since you are connecting the camera module to the CAM0 port, you will need to update your software configuration accordingly. If you previously used dtoverlay=imx477,cam1, you must modify this line in your configuration file to dtoverlay=imx477,cam0 to match the physical port used.

Following these steps precisely should resolve the connection and recognition issues.
