How to take 256mp pictures with the quad-64mp kit? I can only get a 64mp image (ie each cam operates at 16mp)

  1. Where did you get the camera module(s)?
    Arducam online.

  2. Model number of the product(s)?
    Quad-kit with 4 x 64mp cameras.

  3. What hardware/platform were you working on?
    Raspberry Pi 4 model b, 8gb; Bullseye (2022-04-04).

  4. Instructions you have followed. (link/manual/etc.)
    Getting started manual; no problem getting a picture that is multiplexed of 4 cameras, but each cam working at 16mp resolution.

  5. Problems you were having?
    Unable to save an image above 64mp resolution (ie, each camera sends a 16mp image instead of a 64mp image).

  6. The dmesg log from your hardware?

    I’ve googled for a solution, found nothing about resolution.

  8. What help do you need?
    Parameter or different driver to install so I can save 256mp images.

@hugodro

You CAN switch the interface to display full resolution for a single camera at a time, but have not tested how quickly this can be done. I had REALLY hoped we were going to be able to trigger all 4 cameras together at full res, unfortuantely looks like we would need 4x 64MP standalones, and 2x CM4 with I/O board, or 4x standard Raspberry PIs. Hopefully the switching speed is fast enough to get decent throughput - also worth trying the 2-up option. Even if thats 32MP each, still viable

Hello,

I’m trying this, I’ve enabled i2c and installed i2c-tools and selected camera 0 only. I then try to take an image at 9152x6944 but I get:

[email protected]:~ $ libcamera-still -t 5000 --viewfinder-width 9152 --viewfinder-height 6944 -o pi_hawk_eye.jpg --autofocus

My GPU mem is set at 256M:

[pi4]
# Run as fast as firmware / board allows
arm_boost=1
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d,cma-512

[all]

dtoverlay=arducam_64mp
gpu_mem=256

However I’m still getting buffer problems; if I run at 4624x3472, it works in that I get a 64MP image file but that is only with a 16MP viewfinder (I assume it is scaled up by the driver). Is there a way to get a true 64MP image from a camera? Ideally I’d like to take all 4 at 64MP and handle the huge image that comes back but it seems like this is not possible.

hi, @neil-bennziath-com

The saved 64mp image is the real 64mp, not enlarged by the driver.

The libcamera-still program stops the camera when saving the image, and starts the camera after resetting the configuration.

Hello,

Thanks, I’m trying to understand - if the viewfinder height/width is 4624 x 3472; and the image is 9152 x 6944. How is this scaled; is do we have four areas on the sensor being taken up by one area on the viewfinder?

Thanks.

Regards,

Neil
