Windows not recognizing B0385 camera - any tips?

Hey everyone — I just got the B0385 camera module and plugged it into my Windows 10 PC, but nothing happens. No pop-up, no new device showing up, nothing. Windows just isn’t recognizing it at all. I’ve tried plugging it into different USB ports but same result. Any tips on what might be going wrong or how to fix this? Thanks!

Hi there, sorry to hear you’re having trouble! The B0385 is a UVC-compliant camera module, so it’s designed to be plug-and-play with no extra drivers needed on Windows. Since it’s not being detected at all, let’s start with some basic diagnostics.

First, can you open up Device Manager (right-click the Start button > Device Manager) and check if the camera shows up anywhere when it’s plugged in? Look under “Cameras”, “Imaging devices”, or even “Universal Serial Bus controllers” for any unknown or unrecognized device that appears/disappears as you plug/unplug the camera. Let me know what you find!

Okay, so I checked Device Manager and I don’t see anything under “Cameras” at all when I plug it in. I did notice under “Universal Serial Bus controllers” that something briefly flickers when I plug it in — it shows up for a second as “Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)” and then disappears. So Windows is seeing something but it’s not happy about it. Any idea what that means?

That “Device Descriptor Request Failed” error is actually helpful — it tells us Windows is detecting something on the USB bus but can’t properly communicate with it. This usually points to either a cable issue or a port/power problem.

Two quick checks for you:

  1. Cable — Are you using the original USB cable that came in the box with the camera? Some third-party USB cables are charge-only and don’t have the data lines wired up. That flickering and fail behavior is exactly what you’d see with a charge-only cable.

  2. Other USB cameras — Have you ever successfully used any other USB webcam or camera module on this same PC before? Just want to rule out any port or host controller issues on your machine.

Ahh, I think you might be onto something with the cable. I actually couldn’t find the original cable that came in the box, so I grabbed a random USB cable I had lying around. I honestly didn’t even think about it being charge-only.

And to answer your other question — I’ve used a Logitech webcam on this PC before with no issues, so the ports themselves seem fine.

There’s your problem! That random cable is almost certainly a charge-only cable. A lot of those cheap cables only have power and ground wires — no data lines — so the PC can detect a connection but can’t actually talk to the device, which is exactly what that “Device Descriptor Request Failed” error is telling us.

Solution: Find the original USB cable that came with the B0385 module (it should be a data-sync cable with all four wires connected). If you can’t find it, make sure you grab a replacement that specifically says it supports data transfer — not just charging. Any standard USB-A to micro-USB (or USB-C, depending on your module variant) data cable will work.

Once you’ve swapped to a proper data cable, plug it in and the camera should show up under “Cameras” in Device Manager automatically. You’ll then be able to use it with any UVC-compatible app like OBS, Windows Camera, or Zoom right away. Give that a try and let me know!
