Which firmware and install steps for Arducam IMX477 HQ on Jetson Nano JetPack 4.6?

Hi everyone. I’m trying to get an Arducam IMX477 HQ camera board working on a Jetson Nano Dev Kit with Jetpack 4.6. I’m not sure which firmware I should use and how to install it properly. The board is the Arducam for Jetson IMX477 HQ Camera Board, 12.3MP (for Jetson Nano/Xavier NX, Raspberry Pi Compute Module). I tried the driver from https://github.com/ArduCAM/MIPI_Camera/releases/download/v0.0.3/install_full.sh but it doesn’t work. I’ve attached more info. Any pointers on what I’m missing?

Have you tried the camera driver installation command from the Arducam native camera quick start guide? That’s the reference we usually point people to for Jetson. Check this: Quick Start Guide - Arducam Wiki

Yes, I tried exactly the camera driver installation command from that guide (Quick Start Guide - Arducam Wiki). It still doesn’t work.

Hmm, that’s odd. I actually installed the imx477 driver on Jetpack 4.6.x this morning without any issues, so the driver itself should work on that version. Can you run sudo dpkg -l | grep nvidia-l4t-kernel and paste the terminal output? Also retry the camera driver installation and share the full error log so we can see exactly where it fails.

I’ve done a bunch more testing and the driver still won’t install/work. I tried Jetpack 4.5.1 and Jetpack 4.6.3 (results attached), and I also swapped to a different Jetson Nano and a different camera cable. Same result every time.

Can you send pictures of the Jetson devices you tested, front and back? I want to check the carrier board and how the camera is connected.

Here are the photos of the devices, front and back. One thing I should mention: the carrier board is from Waveshare. It’s the Jetson Nano Development / Expansion Kit, the alternative solution to the B01 kit (JETSON-IO-BASE-A, JETSON-NANO-DEV-KIT). I haven’t had problems with other Arducam cameras on this board, and IMX477 cameras from other manufacturers work fine on it too.

Thanks, that’s helpful. The carrier board is probably relevant here. Can you share a bit more detail about the exact Waveshare board you’re using?

Sure. It’s the Waveshare Jetson Nano carrier board pro (for Jetson Nano and Jetson Xavier NX). This is the one I have: Waveshare Jetson Nano carrier board pro Jetson Nano a Jetson Xavier NX - RPishop.cz

Thanks. Based on what you’ve described, the third-party Waveshare carrier board is the likely culprit. The Arducam imx477 driver won’t install properly on it with the Jetson Nano. I’d suggest trying the Jetson native imx477 camera driver instead. Run sudo /opt/nvidia/jetson-io/jetson-io.py and then follow the NVIDIA docs here to configure the driver: generic-no-api-public_r2

I already tried the Jetson native driver too (sudo /opt/nvidia/jetson-io/jetson-io.py) and no luck there either. I’m planning to try the original NVIDIA carrier board once it’s back in stock to rule that out. It really looks like the Waveshare board is the problem.

To summarize where we are: both the Arducam imx477 driver and the Jetson native imx477 driver failed on your Jetson Nano with the Waveshare carrier board, while other cameras work on that same board. So the current conclusion is that this third-party carrier board is incompatible with the imx477 driver on the Jetson Nano. Testing on the original NVIDIA carrier board is the next step to confirm. Please report back with the results once you’re able to test it.
