Unknown error installing dtoverlays with Arducam script on Jetson Xavier NX Jetpack 5.1.2

Hi everyone, I’m trying to get an Arducam MIPI camera working on my Jetson Xavier NX, but the install script keeps dying on me. I’m running the install_full.sh script from the Arducam releases page (https://github.com/ArduCAM/MIPI_Camera/releases/download/v0.0.3/install_full.sh). Partway through, the console just says “An unknown error occurred while installing dtoverlays” and tells me to contact support.

My setup:

  • Nvidia Jetson Xavier NX
  • Booted from SSD
  • Jetpack 5.1.2
  • Ubuntu 20.04

I’ve attached the full log here: https://cdn.arducam.com/forum/17cb991c240b4d9702deb5a5e9733b8a/error_msg.txt

I haven’t really tried anything beyond running the script, since it fails on its own. Any idea what’s going on?

Thanks for attaching the log. I went through it and found the actual error that’s triggering that generic message:

[Errno 2] No such file or directory: ‘/boot/arducam/dts/kernel_tegra194-p3668-0001-p3509-0000-user-custom.dtb’

So the script is looking for that device tree blob under /boot/arducam/dts and it’s not there, which means the dtoverlay installation step never completed. That specific filename pattern (p3668-0001-p3509-0000) is the standard dev kit carrier board, so one thing I’m wondering: are you using a third-party carrier board with the Xavier NX? Could you post pictures of the front and back of the Jetson device so we can verify?

Yes, it’s a third-party carrier board for the Xavier NX, not the official dev kit board. I’ve attached photos of the front and back:

The weird thing is this exact same board worked fine about a year ago with Ubuntu 18.04 and an older Jetpack version. It’s only now with this newer setup that the install fails.

Thanks for confirming and for the photos. Based on that, the issue is almost certainly the third-party carrier board combined with the newer Jetpack 5.1.2 / Ubuntu 20.04 setup. The missing /boot/arducam/dts/kernel_tegra194-p3668-0001-p3509-0000-user-custom.dtb indicates the dtoverlay step can’t generate/apply the correct device tree for this board.

Unfortunately we can only offer general guidance for third-party carrier boards, and we can’t guarantee full compatibility or provide specific support for them. Since you mentioned the same board worked with Ubuntu 18.04 and the older Jetpack version, my recommendation is to revert to that older software setup. The camera should be usable on the Ubuntu 18.04 / older Jetpack combination that previously worked.
