Short answer: the AGX Xavier development board isn’t supported at this time. So that dtoverlays failure is expected — the package is trying to apply overlays for a board we don’t currently have support for, and the post-install script bails out with exit status 255 because of it.
Right now we only support two devices for this camera. I’ve attached a screenshot showing which ones so you can compare against your setup.
If you’re on the AGX Xavier dev board specifically, I’d hold off on the driver install for now rather than trying to force it through dpkg — there isn’t a supported path for that board at the moment.
Okay, that explains the install error, thanks for clarifying.
So just to be sure I understand — I have the IMX477 camera module for Xavier. Does that module work at all on the AGX Xavier, or is it a dead end for this board? I’d rather know now before I keep going down this road.
(For reference, this is the thread I was following: Releases · ArduCAM/MIPI_Camera · GitHub and the two supported devices you’re pointing to are in that screenshot you attached.)
Good question — there’s no hardware compatibility problem with the camera itself. Our IMX477 is consistent with the official IMX477. So you don’t actually need our driver to get the sensor working.
You can use the native (official) imx477 driver instead. The only real difference between the native driver and ours is one resolution.
So if you’re trying to get an IMX477 running on a Jetson, the native driver is the way to go. The install failure you hit is a driver packaging issue for the unsupported board, not a sign the sensor itself can’t work.
Thanks, that’s helpful. One more thing I want to make sure I get right though:
What’s the actual difference between the IMX477 for the Xavier and the IMX477 for the RPi? Are they interchangeable? I have both floating around here and I don’t want to plug the wrong one in and waste time debugging.
(quoting your reply from before: “Our imx477 is consistent with the official imx477. You can use the native driver, the only difference from our driver is one resolution.”)
There are two differences between the RPi IMX477 and the Jetson/Xavier IMX477:
The RPi’s IMX477 needs the R8 resistor modified to be used on Jetson — otherwise it will not be recognized by Jetson at all.
They use different filters.
So no, they’re not directly interchangeable. If you want to run the RPi version on a Jetson, the R8 resistor mod is required first, and even then you still have the filter difference to account for.
To summarize where this thread stands:
The AGX Xavier dev board is not supported at this time, which is why the arducam-nvidia-l4t-kernel install fails with “unknown error occurred while installing dtoverlays” and exit status 255.
The camera hardware itself is fine — our IMX477 matches the official IMX477, so you can use the native imx477 driver. The only difference from our driver is one resolution.
RPi vs Jetson/Xavier IMX477 modules differ in the R8 resistor (needed for Jetson detection) and the filter, so they’re not interchangeable as-is.
For the driver side, this one is just not supported on the AGX Xavier for now, so there’s no workaround from our packaging side to force that install through.
