I have an Arducam 5MP camera connected to a Renesas QCS, with the SPI peripheral running at 16Mbps. I can’t read raw format images (YUV, RGB565) at resolutions above 128x128. At VGA with YUV I only get a partial image and the rest stays green. RGB565 does the same thing. JPEG at VGA shows the full image without any problem. I’ve tried multiple configurations with the 5MP camera but the result is the same. Is there a configuration or speed setting I can change to get YUV/RGB at higher resolutions?
We’ve been looking into this. I tested the same 5MP camera on a Raspberry Pi and an UNO R4 using the examples from the Arducam_Mega repo (Arducam_Mega/examples at main · ArduCAM/Arducam_Mega · GitHub), and I was able to capture both RGB565 and YUV without the partial/green image issue. Since JPEG works at higher resolutions on your side but raw formats don’t, I suspect it’s related to the larger data volume of YUV/RGB565 at those resolutions, which can cause problems during streaming or processing. Can you try the example code from that repo on the QCS and let me know if the same behavior shows up?
The examples on the Arducam_Mega repo say I need the Arducam Mega GUI to test the output, but I can’t find the GUI app anywhere. The links (1) and (2) on the repo just take me to the Releases page (Releases · ArduCAM/Arducam_Mega · GitHub), and that only has SDK .zip and .tar files. Is there a direct download link for the GUI executable?
The GUI installer is available under the v2.0.2 release. You can grab it here: https://github.com/ArduCAM/Arducam_Mega/releases/download/v2.0.2/ArducamMegaSetup_Windows_x64.exe. That’s the Windows x64 setup. Use it together with the Renesas example to check the output.
I installed the GUI and ran the Renesas example from the Arducam repository. Good news: I was able to increase the pixel size for images in YUV format. But when I try video, the GUI tool shows an error for every video size I select. Is there a setting I need to configure differently for video mode?
Did you modify the source code to make the video output YUV instead of JPEG? When I test with the video format set to JPEG, everything works. If the video stream is being sent as YUV, that would explain the error. Can you confirm the video format is set to JPEG and not YUV?
No, I didn’t change the source code. It’s the default example from the repository. The code reads the format dynamically through UART from the user input in the GUI tool, so the video format was not changed to YUV. It’s still at the default setting.
Thanks for confirming. To sum it up: YUV video streaming is not feasible with the Arducam Mega camera because processing a YUV stream requires handling a very large amount of data. Use JPEG for video streaming. YUV is fine for still image capture if you need it. So the supported path is JPEG for video and YUV only for stills.
