Hey everyone, I’ve been at this for about a week now and I cannot get the camera plugins installed on my Raspberry Pi 4. Every attempt ends up failing somehow and I’m honestly out of ideas. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
Sorry to hear that. Which camera module are you using, and what OS/image is on the Pi? That’ll help narrow things down.
It’s an Arducam B0176. I’ve also been following the manual here: https://www.uctronics.com/download/Amazon/B0176_Manual.pdf. Separate issue but related - I can’t get the camera working at all either, so I need the proper plugins and the install manual.
Thanks, that’s the autofocus OV5647 module. When you try to view the camera, what actually happens? If you can share a screenshot of the output, that would help.
I tried viewing the camera and this is what came back (screenshot attached). It doesn’t look like it’s finding the camera.
Got it. So it looks like you’re unable to install the camera plugins and the camera won’t come up. Before we change more settings, I’d like to get a diagnostic report from the system so we can see what’s going on under the hood.
Here’s how to generate it:
- Reboot the device.
- Download the tool:
wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report - Make it executable:
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report - Run it:
./arducam-camera-bug-report - It’ll create arducam-bug-report.txt in the current directory. Send that over and I’ll analyze it.
I ran those commands (screenshot attached of the output). One thing I’m confused about - I’m not sure where the bug report actually gets exported/generated.
The tool writes arducam-bug-report.txt into whichever directory you ran it from. You can run ‘ls’ to confirm it’s there. Send that file over in a private message and I’ll dig into it.
Okay, I generated the bug report and submitted it. New issue now though - the Pi 4 no longer sees the camera as a device at all.
Did that start after running the report tool, or was it already happening? First things to check: reseat the ribbon cable on both ends and reboot. Are you using the original cable or a replacement?
I’ve already tried multiple ribbon cables and rebooted the Pi several times. Here’s a screenshot of what I’m seeing - still nothing.
Let’s rule out the software environment. Are you running the full desktop version of OctoPi/OctoPrint, or the lite image?
It’s the desktop version of OctoPi/OctoPrint. The camera’s still not working, it’s been over a week at this point. Screenshot attached.
Understood. To make progress faster, would you be open to a remote session? I’ve sent the remote support details privately - please check your messages if you’re okay with it.
I’d rather not do a remote connection into my home network, sorry. Can I just export another bug report instead and go from there?
Totally fine. While you generate that, you mentioned a permission denied error when installing the camera libraries. Can you paste the exact command and the full error you’re getting?
Here’s what happens when I try to install the camera libraries - I get permission denied partway through.
That usually means the install script needs to run with elevated rights. Have you also had a chance to try the alternate image I suggested earlier?
I tried the alternate image you suggested and still no success. My next plan is to add ‘sudo’ to the camera library install commands and see if that clears the permission issue.
