Hi everyone. I’ve got a Uctronics B0202 UVC camera and I’m noticing it runs quite hot when I’m streaming the h.264 camera stream. The small heatsink attached to the chip on the back is reading 68.4°C at normal room/ambient temperature. The datasheet says the max operating temperature is 70°C, so this feels way too close to the limit. Is this normal? Is there a way to bring the IC temperature down, or is something actually wrong with this unit?
Thanks for the details. Just to make sure I understand the setup: can you confirm the exact model and what platform/environment it’s running on? Also, have you made any attempts to address the temperature, and do you have any logs or code you can share? That will help narrow things down.
Sure. Model is the Uctronics B0202, UVC webcam. It’s running on an Alinx SoM platform. Honestly I haven’t tried anything yet - not sure what there is to do. No logs or code to share, I was just measuring the heatsink with a thermal probe while the h.264 stream was running.
Okay, got it. Looking at the specs, there are actually two different temperature ratings here that are easy to mix up. The working environment temperature range for the B0202 is specified up to a maximum of 70°C - that’s the ambient air temperature around the device. The device itself (the IC/chip) is rated for a maximum operating temperature of 100°C. Your measured 68.4°C on the heatsink is below that 100°C device limit, so based on what you’ve reported, it’s not a failure.
Ah, I see - so I was comparing the heatsink temperature to the 70°C ambient limit? So 68.4°C on the chip while streaming h.264 is actually within the rated range? Just want to be sure I’m not going to cook it over time.
Right, exactly. The 70°C figure is the working environment (ambient) limit, not the chip limit. The heatsink sitting at 68.4°C while you’re streaming h.264 is within the device’s rated operating range, so it’s not considered a fault. The main thing to watch is that the ambient temperature around the camera stays at or below 70°C to keep everything reliable.
Okay, that makes more sense. So if I keep the room/ambient temp under 70°C, I’m good? Anything else I should do to keep the temperatures lower during long h.264 streams?
Yes, keep the working environment (ambient) temperature at or below 70°C during operation - that’s the key requirement for optimal performance and reliability of the B0202. To recap: the working environment limit is max 70°C, but the device’s own maximum operating temperature is 100°C. The 68.4°C heatsink temperature you measured while streaming h.264 is within that device rating, so it’s not considered a fault. Just keep the ambient conditions under control and you should be fine.
