U6248 extension module not detecting Raspberry Pi HQ camera on CM4 IO board

Hi all, hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I’m using a U6248 extension kit with a Raspberry Pi HQ camera on a CM4 IO board. If I plug the camera directly into the IO board it shows up fine and I get a live preview, but when I put the U6248 in between, the camera isn’t recognized at all. I’ve tried a few different cameras through the U6248 and none of them are detected. Running Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye 64-bit. Also, side note - the STEP file for the U6248 extension kit seems to have disappeared from the website. Does anyone have a copy or a working link?

Thanks for posting. Quick check first: is the carrier board the official Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 IO board, or a third-party one? If it’s the official board, could you send a couple of photos of how the cables are connected? That will help a lot with the diagnosis. For the STEP file, you can grab the 3D drawing here: https://www.uctronics.com/download/Mechanical_Drawing/U6248.STEP

Yes, it’s the official Raspberry Pi CM4 IO board, not a third-party one. Setup is the HQ camera + U6248, Bullseye 64-bit. I’ve sent you the connection photos in a private message. I also tested different cameras through the U6248 and none worked, so it doesn’t seem to be the camera itself. Thanks for the STEP link, that downloaded fine.

Thanks, I looked at the photos. I found the issue - the cable you have between the lens kit and the CM4 IO board is the wrong type. That connection needs a 15-pin to 22-pin flex cable. If you use this type of cable instead it should be recognized again: Arducam 15cm 15 pin to 22 Pin Camera Cable for Raspberry Pi Zero&W

That would explain it, thanks. I’ll order a couple of those 15-22 pin cables and test again. One more thing while I’m here - the CM4 IO board has two camera connectors. Can I run two U6248 modules at the same time, one on each connector? I’d like to hook up two HQ cameras through V3Link.

Good question. For multiple U6248 modules on the CM4 IO board you’d need a hardware modification on the module itself: solder six male headers underneath the U6248, as shown in this writeup about running 8 cameras on a CM4: https://www.arducam.com/running-8-cameras-simultaneously-on-raspberry-pi-compute-module-4/ - I’ve also sent you the relevant details privately. One caveat: we haven’t personally done this exact modification, but in theory it should be feasible. Soldering takes some precision, and any modification is done at your own risk - it may void warranty and we can’t guarantee the modified module’s performance or reliability.
