Two UB0229 UVC cameras cannot run simultaneously on Windows 10 USB 3 ports

Hi, I’ve got two of the Arducam UB0229 cameras (8MP Sony IMX179) and I need to run both at the same time on Windows 10. Even when I connect them to different USB 3 ports, I can’t get them working simultaneously. I’m starting to think it’s because both cameras report the same serial number. I found a similar case here for the B0202: B0202 — Cannot use multiple cameras at the same time - #4 by usamex1

Thanks for the details. Just to be sure we’re talking about the right hardware — we have several different IMX179 camera models, so I’d like to confirm exactly which one you have before going further. Could you post pictures of the camera, front and back? In the thread you linked, that user was sent custom software to get multiple cameras running simultaneously, but the model matters, so let’s identify yours first.

Here’s what I know about the cameras:

  • Product series: UVC Camera (Webcams)
  • Model number: UB0229
  • Sensor: 8MP Sony IMX179
  • Platform: Windows 10 x64
  • Interface: USB 3 ports

I’ve already tried connecting the two cameras to separate USB 3 ports, but simultaneous operation is still impossible. If there’s custom software for this model like the B0202 case, that would really help.

Here are the pictures you asked for, front and back:

I’ve reviewed the photos you sent. That confirms the UB0229 model. The reason you can’t run both cameras at once is exactly what you suspected — both units have identical serial numbers, so the system can’t tell them apart even when they’re on separate USB 3 ports. The catch is that this particular model doesn’t support modifying the serial number and device name.

So to sum up: the workaround used in the B0202 thread relied on changing the serial number/device name, but that isn’t supported on the UB0229. Unfortunately that means the serial-number-based fix for running multiple cameras simultaneously isn’t possible on this model, and at this point there’s no solution available for running two of these together.
