Two cameras on custom Android ROM: support, config.txt setup, default camera app driver?

Hi, I have a question about two camera modules I picked up. One is a 64mp camera and the other is a 16mp imx519 (B0371). I’m trying to use them on a custom Android ROM build, but I’m honestly not sure if these are even supported on Android at all.

If they are supported, how do I change settings in the config.txt file? And is there a camera driver I can drop in so the cameras get detected in the default camera app?

Any pointers would be great, I’m kind of stuck at the detection stage right now.

Hi, thanks for posting. Quick heads up that the person who normally handles the Android/IMX519 specifics is out today, so I can’t give you the full technical answer right away. I’ll make sure this gets picked up as soon as they’re back so we can sort out the support question and the config.txt / driver side properly.

Coming back to this now. To set expectations clearly: our camera driver stack is built around the Raspberry Pi Bullseye (Raspberry Pi OS) system. We have not tested it on the Android platform, so we don’t offer Android support for these modules.

That applies to both the 64mp and the 16mp imx519 B0371. Since the driver stack targets the Pi side and not Android, there isn’t a config.txt / driver path we can hand you for the default Android camera app to detect them. If you’re planning an Android build, that’s outside what the current driver stack is designed for.

Thanks for clarifying. So on Android it’s basically untested/unsupported, got it.

That said, if I switch to using the Pi, which driver is actually used for the 16mp imx519 B0371? Could you send me a link to it? I’d like to at least look at the driver source and see what’s involved.

Sure. For the 16mp imx519 B0371 on Raspberry Pi, the relevant driver is the IMX519 camera driver in the Raspberry Pi Linux kernel. The source lives here:

That’s the imx519.c file in the raspberrypi/linux repository. Have a look through it and feel free to ask if you need more help.
