Trails after moving camera against IR LEDs at lowest exposure – Arducam OV2311 USB camera

Hi everyone, we’re testing an Arducam SKU B0322 (Arducam 2MP Global Shutter USB Camera Board, OV2311 monochrome UVC webcam module with the low distortion M12 lens) on a Windows laptop using AMCap. We’re observing small IR LED diodes, and when the camera is moved we get lines/trails behind the lights. It looks a bit like the iris is wide open or the exposure is set very high, but exposure is already at its minimum (-13). We also set brightness, gamma and gain to minimum. Capture is 1600x1200 @ 50 FPS, gamma lowest is 72. The behavior is also intermittent/unstable. Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks for the report. Could you share a picture or a short video showing the phenomenon? That will help us understand what you’re seeing. Also, just to confirm, are you changing these settings through AMCap’s Video Capture Filter option?

Here are a few images showing the effect. In AMCap I used the Video Capture Filter to lower exposure, brightness, gamma and gain all the way to minimum, and the result is the same.

The exposure won’t go below -13 and gamma won’t go below 72. Is it possible to set exposure lower or gamma below 72? Also, any idea what could be causing the trails when moving against the IR LEDs even at minimum exposure?

Looking at the images, I see what you mean. On the default firmware, this module supports exposure down to -13 and gamma down to 72. Values below those limits are not supported by the default firmware. If you need exposure lower than -13 or gamma below 72, that would require a customized firmware. For that, you can contact the sales team at [email protected].

Thanks. Could you give us more details about the customized firmware? And do you have any suggestion on what actually causes the lines/trails effect when moving against the IR LEDs even with exposure, brightness, gain and gamma all at minimum? We’d like to understand whether a customized firmware would really address this.

To be honest, we haven’t run this camera in that exact configuration (IR LEDs, moving camera, with exposure/gain/brightness all set to minimum), so we can’t give a definite answer on what is causing the trails. Based on the settings, what you’re describing goes beyond what the default firmware exposes. For details on customized firmware and whether it can change the exposure/gamma behavior, please reach out to [email protected].
