ToF Camera X003L04C7J fails to initialize after second install on Raspberry Pi 4B

Hi everyone, I’m stuck with my Arducam ToF camera and hoping someone can point me in the right direction. The camera is an X003L04C7J / B0410C, and after I run the second part of the installation it just fails to initialize. At the end I get “no cameras available” and nothing shows up. Has anyone seen this before?

Sorry to hear that. Could you tell me a bit more about your setup so we can narrow it down? Specifically the board model, OS version, and which installation guide you followed.

Sure, here’s my setup:

The first part of the installation actually completed successfully. It’s the second part after the reboot that ends with the errors.

Thanks, that helps. Could you post the exact output you get after the reboot? It would also help to know what happens when you run the preview and the libcamera hello command.

Here’s what I’m seeing. When I run preview_usb I get:

open WARNING Could not open device node /dev/video0. Please check permissions. Initialization failed.

And libcamera-hello just says:

ERROR: *** no cameras available ***

I’ve attached a screenshot of the terminal output too:

Thanks for the screenshot and the exact output. So to summarize what I can see: you’ve connected the ToF camera X003L04C7J / B0410C to an RPi 4B running Bookworm 2023-10-10. The first part of the install from the getting-started guide completed fine, but after the reboot the second part fails with:

preview_usb → open WARNING Could not open device node /dev/video0. Please check permissions. Initialization failed.
libcamera-hello → ERROR: *** no cameras available ***

That combination points to a driver issue rather than a simple permissions problem.

I checked into this and found the root cause. The ToF camera driver has not been released for Bookworm OS yet. That’s why the device node isn’t coming up properly even though the first part of the install went through.

The workaround for now is to use Bullseye instead. Please burn your kernel version to 6.1.21 (Bullseye OS). We have not released the camera driver on Bookworm OS so far, so that’s why you’re hitting the initialization failure.

Got it, thanks. So to confirm what I understand: the camera driver just isn’t released for Bookworm yet, and support advised burning the kernel version to 6.1.21 (Bullseye OS). I’ll reflash and give it another try.

That’s correct. To recap the conclusion: ToF camera driver support currently requires Bullseye OS with kernel 6.1.21, and Bookworm OS is not yet supported. Once you’re on Bullseye with that kernel, run through the getting-started guide again and the camera should initialize. If you still see issues after that, let us know and we can dig further.
