Severe vignetting and color inaccuracies with Arducam camera on Jetson Nano for color detection project

Hi everyone. I’m using the Arducam 1MP4 Quadrascopic Camera Bundle Kit (four OV9782 global shutter color modules + Camarray Camera HAT B0331) on a Jetson Nano. The vignetting / lens shadow is really severe on the output, to the point where the cameras are basically unusable for our project.

Our application depends on color detection, so the color needs to come out accurately. Right now the displayed colors are noticeably different from the actual scene. I’ve read that this camera doesn’t support ISP on the Jetson platform for the time being, which probably explains some of the color shift, but the lens shadow is also very heavy.

Has anyone else hit this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the detailed report. The color difference you’re seeing is expected on the Jetson side - the OV9782 modules in this bundle don’t have ISP support on Jetson, so the color won’t be accurately reproduced there. For the color accuracy part, the best step is to test the same bundle on a Raspberry Pi, where ISP is supported. The Pivariety quick start guide should get you going:

https://docs.arducam.com/Raspberry-Pi-Camera/Pivariety-Camera/Quick-Start-Guide/#pivariety-cameras

On the vignetting/lens shadow, can you confirm whether it appears the same across all four cameras or only some of them? That would help narrow down whether it’s an optical characteristic of the modules or something else in the capture pipeline.

Thanks for the pointer - we’ll test on a Raspberry Pi to verify the color side of things.

Two follow-up questions though. First, is it possible to buy just new camera modules that are compatible with the existing Camarray HAT? Buying a whole new kit isn’t really an option for us, and we were hoping to swap in modules that don’t have this vignetting/color problem. Second, is there any software we can implement to correct the lens shadow effect on the Jetson side?

For the software correction question - flat-field / lens shading correction applied downstream on the raw frames is possible in principle, but since there’s no ISP on Jetson for these modules you’d be doing it manually. It can reduce the shading somewhat, but it won’t fully fix the underlying color accuracy issue, and it adds complexity to your pipeline.

On buying separate modules: unfortunately no. The camera modules and the HAT in this bundle are a unique paired combination - the clock signal is cut in this design, so the modules can’t simply be swapped with other or newer cameras. There isn’t a separately purchasable set of compatible modules for this HAT. If different modules are needed, it would require a different kit.
