Poor nighttime and backlight image quality, distortion with Arducam AR0234 on car windshield

Hey everyone, I’m running into some image quality issues with my setup and hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. I’m using an Arducam AR0234 camera module for an automotive project — it’s mounted behind the car windshield. During nighttime driving and in backlight situations (like driving toward the sun or at night with oncoming headlights), the frames are just… not great. They’re not what I’d call ‘perfect frames’ at all. Lots of noise, poor detail, just overall bad quality. Anyone else used this sensor in similar conditions?

Can you share a bit more about the conditions and what exactly you’re seeing? Also, do you know what lens is currently on that AR0234 module? And what sort of exposure/gain settings are you running? Nighttime through a windshield is a pretty tough scenario for any camera, so knowing the current lens specs would help a lot.

Yeah, so the module is attached directly to the windshield — it’s for an automotive application. I’m also noticing what looks like some distortion in the image, which I suspect might be contributing to the overall poor quality. I don’t have the exact lens specs handy at the moment (I’ll need to check), but I did some digging and it seems like a lower F-stop (wider aperture) and lower distortion lens could help significantly for nighttime performance. The thing is, I’m not sure if switching lenses would actually make a meaningful difference here, or if I’m barking up the wrong tree. I have zero optical engineering experience — this is for a student project — so I’m kind of learning as I go.

You’re actually on the right track with your research. A lower F-stop lens would let in more light, which directly helps with nighttime sensitivity. And lower distortion would clean up the image geometry, especially important if you’re doing any kind of object detection or computer vision downstream. But there are a few things to unpack here before jumping to a lens swap. The AR0234 itself — do you know if the low-light sensitivity of the sensor is adequate for your use case through a windshield? Windshields can attenuate a surprising amount of light and also introduce reflections depending on the mounting angle. What camera settings are you running right now — exposure time, analog/digital gain, any ISP parameters you’ve tweaked?

I haven’t really dug into the ISP settings or gain parameters yet honestly — that’s part of why I’m here. I was hoping to find some example images from other lenses to compare, especially nighttime and backlight performance. Does Arducam (or anyone here) have sample shots from different lenses on the AR0234? Like, comparing the stock lens against something with a lower F-stop or a different focal length? That would help me figure out if a lens change is even worth pursuing before I start messing with settings. I just don’t want to spend money on a lens if the sensor itself is the bottleneck, you know?

Totally fair concern. Unfortunately I don’t have a ready-made comparison gallery of different lenses on the AR0234 that I can point you to publicly. But here’s what I’d suggest as a methodical approach before buying any new glass: first, let’s figure out your current lens specs — specifically the F-stop, focal length, and any distortion figures if available. If it’s the stock lens that came with the module, I can look up what Arducam typically ships with that sensor. Second, we should look at your exposure and gain settings — if the camera is underexposing at night, you might be able to improve things significantly just by adjusting exposure time and analog gain before hitting the sensor’s noise floor. The AR0234 has decent low-light sensitivity for its class, but windshield mounting adds another variable. Are you getting reflections off the glass at night?

Yeah, I do get some reflections depending on the angle, but I’ve angled it as best I can to minimize that. I’ll pull the lens specs — I’m pretty sure it’s whatever Arducam includes by default with the AR0234 module. The distortion is definitely noticeable though, especially toward the edges. If you or anyone has suggestions for a low F-stop, low-distortion lens that works with this sensor’s mount, I’m all ears. I’ve been reading that decreasing distortion and going with a wider aperture are the two main levers for improving nighttime performance, but since I have no optics background, I don’t really know where to start with lens selection or what trade-offs to expect.

So to summarize where things stand: we haven’t pinpointed the root cause yet, but the investigation needs to focus on three areas — (1) your current lens specs (F-stop, focal length, distortion characteristics), (2) your camera settings (exposure, gain, ISP parameters), and (3) whether the AR0234’s low-light sensitivity is sufficient for nighttime automotive use through a windshield given your specific application requirements. You’re approaching this correctly by researching lower F-stop and lower-distortion lenses, but before we can recommend specific alternatives, we need to know what you’re working with now. I’d recommend pulling the current lens model and specs first. From there, we can talk about whether a lens swap alone would help, or if you also need to dial in the exposure/gain pipeline and possibly add some ISP tuning for the nighttime/backlight scenarios. Once you have those details, post them here and we can dig deeper.
