Pi4 Hawkeye 64MP - no preview window when doing a rpicam-hello test

  1. Where did you get the camera module(s)?
  1. Model number of the product(s)?

Hawkeye 64MP B0399

  1. What hardware/platform were you working on?

headless Raspberry Pi 4B running bookworm, I SSH into it from a windows laptop

  1. Instructions you have followed. (link/manual/etc.)

Quick Start Guide from Arducam wiki. I have not installed the focus software onto my pi (for the Hawkeye focus features) and I have a arducam pan/tilt kit that I have not yet hooked up as I’m working on the installation one step at a time.

  1. Problems you were having?

I think the camera is installed correctly - rpicam-still with the JPEG option results in a good jpeg file.

when I run rpicam-hello, I get no popup video window and here is the stuff that shows up in my SSH terminal window:

$ rpicam-hello

I suspect because I’m using a headless pi 4b and remoting from a windows laptop over my home wifi network, that might be the reason a preview window does not show up. Does rpicam stream a video IP on my home network that I have to use VLC to play, for instance?

  1. The dmesg log from your hardware?

please advise what dmesg command you want me to run.

  1. Troubleshooting attempts you’ve made?

searched google for a few minutes. searched the forum here for a few minutes to try to find out a solution or what is going on.

  1. What help do you need?

How do I get a video window showing me what the camera is seeing? A video window would be helpful for monitoring the focus changes when I get around to installing/using the focus stuff and later the pan/tilt system I will be adding when I get video window and focus stuff figured out.

Hi,
Thanks for reaching out.
Yes, you’re correct. You can run a command like rpicam-vid to stream the camera and use VLC to play. However, you could observe a noticeable lag with this command.

I highly recommend using a graphical desktop Bookworm OS to get a live preview window with low latency. Otherwise, you can install RealVNC on your PC and use it to log in to your Pi via this software if you don’t want to connect your Pi to a display. In the meantime,

if your Pi is headless (not plugged into a monitor) or not running a graphical desktop, RealVNC Server can still give you graphical remote access using a virtual desktop.
