Hi, I’ve got an ArduCam 64MP autofocus camera hooked up to my Pi and I can’t get it to show up. Running ls /dev/video* returns nothing for video0, and libcamera-still just gives ERROR: *** no cameras available ***. Any ideas what I’m missing?
Could you share a few details so we can pin this down? Camera model, hardware revision, kernel version, and which driver package you’re using. Also, which guide/setup steps you followed would help.
Sure. It’s the 64MP Autofocus Camera for Raspberry Pi, model B0399. Hardware revision b03115, kernel 6.1.21-v8+. The package is 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver -- bullseye-v5. I followed the Pivariety-Camera Quick Start Guide, set dtoverlay=arducam-pivariety in config.txt, installed libcamera_dev and libcamera_apps, then rebooted with the camera connected. After that I ran ./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p kernel_driver and it errored out.
Thanks. Can you paste the exact output from that install script? And after the reboot, what does ls /dev/video* show, and what’s the full output when you run libcamera-still -t 5000?
Here’s the install script output:
Cannot find the corresponding package, please send the following information to [email protected]
Hardware Revision: b03115
Kernel Version: 6.1.21-v8+
Package: 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver -- bullseye-v5
You are using an unsupported kernel version, please install the official SD Card image(do not execute rpi-update):
https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/
And ls /dev/video* still shows no /dev/video0. Running libcamera-still -t 5000 gives:
Made X/EGL preview window

I see what’s happening. You’re using the wrong guide for this camera. The B0399 64MP Autofocus camera needs the Native camera Quick Start Guide, not the Pivariety-Camera guide. Because of that, the dtoverlay=arducam-pivariety overlay and the pivariety kernel driver install aren’t the right path for it. On top of that, your kernel 6.1.21-v8+ is unsupported for the 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver -- bullseye-v5 package, which is why the script stops with that ‘unsupported kernel version’ message.
Ah, that would explain why nothing shows up. So I should stop following the Pivariety guide entirely? And do I need to reflash the SD card because of the kernel version, or is there a way around it?
Right — drop the Pivariety guide for this camera and follow the Native camera Quick Start Guide instead: Quick Start Guide - Arducam Wiki . For the kernel, the script’s warning is the key part: install the official SD Card image and do not execute rpi-update, so you’re on a supported kernel. You can grab it from Raspberry Pi OS downloads – Raspberry Pi . Once you’re on the official image, go through the Native guide’s setup for the B0399.
Thank you, it works now. Reflashing to the official image and following the Native camera guide did the trick.
Glad that sorted it. To sum it up for anyone hitting the same thing: the 64MP Autofocus Camera (B0399) should use the Native camera guide, not the Pivariety one, and the bullseye-v5 kernel driver package won’t install on kernel 6.1.21-v8+ — it requires the official Raspberry Pi OS image without rpi-update. With the correct guide and a supported image, libcamera-still picks up the camera and /dev/video0 shows up.
