Need unique IDs for multiple OV9782 UVC cameras on Windows 11

Hi everyone, I’ve got several Arducam Global Shutter Color USB 1MP OV9782 UVC webcam modules connected to a single Windows 11 PC, and I need to identify each camera uniquely in my software. The problem is this camera model doesn’t let me change the serial number or device name, and the serial number tool I have doesn’t support it.

What I’ve tried so far: I used the serial number tool to change the device name/serial number, but after I unplug the camera and plug it back in it goes back to the default name. If I ‘uninstall’ the device and then ‘refresh’, it sometimes comes back with the new name I set, but it’s flaky.

A few questions: when will the serial tool support this model? Is there a newer version of the serial number tool, and where can I download it? Is there a specific Windows 11 driver I should be using, and where do I get it? Also, is there an internal datasheet for this module? I noticed Arducam uses sonixcamera.lib, so I’m guessing that library can flash/change the internal blocks where the USB fields/data are taken from.

Thanks for the details. Can you confirm the exact module — is it the Arducam Global Shutter Color USB 1MP OV9782 UVC Webcam Module (the one sold by UCTRONICS)? The behavior you described, where the new name/serial only sometimes sticks after an uninstall/refresh but not after a replug, matches what we’ve seen with this module.

Yes, that’s the exact model I’m using. So with several of these plugged into the same PC, how am I supposed to identify each camera? If the current tool doesn’t support this model, when could support be added? And can I get the internal datasheet so I can do it myself? Since Arducam uses sonixcamera.lib, I assume that lib can flash or change the internal blocks where the USB fields/data are read from.

Thanks for confirming. I checked this with the team: the standard module and its firmware do not support modifying the serial number and device name. That’s why the changes from the serial tool don’t persist after a replug — those fields simply aren’t rewritable on this module as-is.

For identifying multiple cameras uniquely, the standard firmware won’t give you unique IDs out of the box. The workable route is custom firmware — we can build camera firmware that provides a unique identification per unit so your software can tell them apart. If you’d like to go that way, I can put you in touch with our sales team for the customization.

Thanks, that makes sense. You mentioned a sales contact before — Irene, I think? I don’t have her contact details. Could you send them over? Also, roughly how much would the customization cost?

I’ve sent the sales contact details to you via private message. They’ll have you fill out a detailed requirements form, and then they can evaluate the customization cost for your specific setup. Bottom line: since the standard module can’t do unique serial/device name changes, the custom firmware route is the way to get unique identification per camera.
