Need detailed SPI register datasheet for Arducam Mega-5MP with STM32F103

Hey everyone, I’m working on a standalone image capture system using the Arducam Mega-5MP (10th Anniversary edition) with an STM32F103 microcontroller. The idea is to grab a frame over SPI and then transmit it using the SSTV protocol.

I’ve gone through the SPI camera application notes on the Arducam site but honestly they’re pretty barebones — not much there for someone doing low-level register work on a non-Arduino platform. I really need a detailed datasheet with proper register-level configuration info. Stuff like initialization sequence, register map, what each register does, polling/status bits, that kind of thing.

Anyone know where I can find this? Or has anyone gotten this camera working on bare-metal with an STM32?

Thanks for reaching out. For the Arducam Mega series, a formal register-level datasheet isn’t distributed publicly, but the closest reference for low-level interaction is the source code in the Arducam_Mega GitHub repository.

Specifically, take a look at ArducamCamera.c:

This file contains the primary register-level routines — initialization, register read/write functions, and the polling/status handling. You’ll need to extract the register addresses and bit patterns from the code itself since that’s essentially the reference implementation. The SPI command structure, register addresses, and polling logic are all in there. It’s written for Arduino but the register-level calls map pretty directly to any platform that can do SPI.

Thanks for the pointer. I’ve been digging through ArducamCamera.c for a few days now and I’ve managed to piece together most of the init sequence and basic register I/O. But I’m stuck on one thing — I can’t figure out the bit pattern for the polling register.

Specifically, I need the configuration details for register 0x44. The code references it during capture sequences but it’s not obvious what each bit means or what values I should be watching for. I see reads and some conditional checks against it, but without knowing the bit layout I’m just guessing.

Can anyone share what register 0x44 actually controls and what the individual bits represent? This is the last piece I need to get the capture pipeline working.

I understand the frustration — register 0x44 is indeed the polling/status register and it’s central to controlling the capture flow, so I can see why you’re stuck without it.

Unfortunately, the low-level write configurations for core operational registers like 0x44 aren’t something we share publicly. The reason is that an incorrect write to certain registers can put the camera into an unrecoverable state, and we’ve seen that happen when folks experiment with bit patterns without the full context.

That said, we can still help you get this working. Can you describe what you’re specifically trying to achieve? For example:

  • Are you trying to trigger a single frame capture and wait for it to complete?
  • Are you synchronizing the capture to an external event or signal?
  • Is there a particular triggering behavior you need that the standard single-shot mode doesn’t cover?

If you can outline your exact use case, I can escalate this internally and have the engineering team provide you with a safe, tested code snippet or a high-level command sequence that handles register 0x44 properly for your scenario — without exposing the raw register details that could brick the module.
