Multi-camera adapter board with IMX519 cameras not working on Pi 3B+

Hi everyone, I’m having trouble getting my multi-camera setup working. I’m using a Raspberry Pi 3B+ with the Arducam Multi-camera Adapter Module V2.2 and two IMX519 cameras. The cameras don’t seem to be detected at all when connected through the adapter board. Has anyone run into this before? I’ve double-checked all the ribbon cable connections and power, but no luck.

Sorry to hear you’re running into issues. Let’s start with some diagnostics to understand what’s going on. Could you run the following and share the output?

dmesg | grep -i arducam

Also, can you check if the system sees any I2C devices on the camera bus? Try:

i2cdetect -y 10

That’ll give us a starting point to see what the kernel is seeing.

Thanks for the quick reply. I ran those commands and grabbed the full debug output. Here’s what I’m seeing:

output1.txt

I’m not super familiar with the low-level stuff, but it looks like maybe the cameras aren’t showing up on the I2C bus at all. The dmesg output has some errors but I’m not sure what they mean.

Thanks for that. I can see some concerning entries in the output. Let’s dig deeper — could you generate a full bug report using the Arducam diagnostic script? This will give us a more complete picture of your kernel version, loaded modules, device tree status, and camera detection state.

Run:

./arducam_bug_report.sh

And share the resulting file. That should help narrow things down significantly.

Here’s the bug report:

arducam-bug-report.txt

Let me know if you spot anything unusual in there. I noticed it mentions something about the IMX519 driver but I’m not sure if it’s loading correctly through the adapter.

Thanks, that’s very helpful. Before I draw any conclusions, could you also upload a couple of photos of your physical setup? I’d like to see how the cameras are connected to the adapter board and how the adapter is connected to the Pi. Sometimes physical connection issues can cause symptoms similar to what you’re seeing, and it’ll help me rule that out.

Sure, here are the photos of my setup:

Everything seems seated properly as far as I can tell. Let me know if you see anything off.

Alright, after reviewing your debug logs, bug report, and the photos, I’ve found the issue — and it’s unfortunately a hardware compatibility limitation.

The Arducam Multi-camera Adapter Module V2.2 is designed and tested to work with the following camera modules:

  • 5MP (OV5647)
  • 8MP (IMX219)
  • 12MP (IMX477)
  • IMX708

The 16MP IMX519 cameras you’re using are not supported by this adapter. The IMX519 requires different drivers and makes use of hardware resources that aren’t available through the adapter’s switching mechanism — so the adapter simply can’t properly interface with IMX519 sensors, which is why you’re seeing no detection on the I2C bus and the driver isn’t initializing.

Your IMX519 cameras themselves are almost certainly functional. The solution is to bypass the adapter entirely: connect a single IMX519 camera directly to the Raspberry Pi’s native CSI camera port. That should work without any issues.

For reference, the compatibility list for the V2.2 adapter is documented here: Arducam Multi Camera Adapter Module V2.2 for Rasperry Pi Camera Module 3 12MP IMX708 / 5MP OV5647 / 8MP IMX219 / 12MP IMX477 Cameras — you’ll notice the IMX519 is not listed as a supported sensor.

So to summarize:

  • Do not use the Multi-camera Adapter Module V2.2 with IMX519 cameras
  • Connect the IMX519 directly to the Pi’s CSI port for single-camera use
  • If you need multi-camera with IMX519 sensors, you’d need a different hardware solution that explicitly supports that sensor

Give the direct connection a try and let us know how it goes!
