Libcamera-still reports no cameras available on Pi 5 with Arducam 64MP Hawkeye

Hi all, I’m having trouble getting an Arducam 64MP Hawkeye working on a Raspberry Pi 5. I keep hitting an error when I try to use libcamera. Running libcamera-still -t 5000 just ends with ERROR: *** no cameras available ***. The camera is connected but it’s not being detected at all. Has anyone run into this?

Hey, sorry you’re hitting this. Can you paste the full terminal output from that command? There are usually some clues buried in the lines before the ‘no cameras available’ message. Also, what libcamera and libpisp versions are you on? That’ll help narrow it down.

Sure, here’s my environment:

  • Raspberry Pi 5
  • Arducam 64MP Hawkeye
  • libcamera v0.3.1+49-48fe316f
  • libpisp v1.0.7 28196ed6edcf 29-08-2024 (16:33:32)

And this is the full output when I run libcamera-still -t 5000:

[0:13:11.140504855] [2146] INFO Camera camera_manager.cpp:316 libcamera v0.3.1+49-48fe316f

Made X/EGL preview window
ERROR: *** no cameras available ***

The preview window pops up briefly, but then it says no cameras.

Thanks, that log is actually really helpful. Let me walk through it:

  • libcamera v0.3.1+49-48fe316f and libpisp v1.0.7 ... just confirm the versions in use.
  • No static properties available for 'arducam_64mp' means the camera sensor properties database has no entry for your sensor.
  • Please consider updating the camera sensor properties database follows directly from that.
  • Configuration file 'arducam_64mp.json' not found for IPA module 'rpi/pisp' is the big one - the IPA tuning/config file for this sensor is missing.
  • Could not create camera helper for arducam_64mp happens because that config file is missing.
  • Failed to load a suitable IPA library then Failed to register camera arducam_64mp 4-001a: -22 - so the camera never gets registered.
  • The Made X/EGL preview window line is just the preview window being created, unrelated to camera detection.
  • ERROR: *** no cameras available *** is the final result.

So your libcamera build simply doesn’t have the Arducam 64MP support files (the .json IPA config and the sensor properties entry). That’s why registration fails with -22.

Ah okay, so it’s probably not a wiring problem - the sensor just isn’t supported by my current libcamera build. How do I get the missing support added? Do I need to reinstall something?

There’s an updated arducam libcamera package that includes the missing 64MP support files. I’d suggest updating it - the steps are here:

To recap the diagnosis: the missing arducam_64mp.json IPA configuration and the missing static sensor properties mean your current libcamera build lacks Arducam 64MP support. That’s why the camera helper couldn’t be created, registration failed with -22, and you ended up with ‘no cameras available’. Updating the arducam libcamera package should resolve it. Run libcamera-still -t 5000 again after the update, and if it still throws the same errors, post the fresh output and we’ll dig further.
