IMX519 camera not detected, libcamera-hello unsupported v4l format warnings on Raspberry Pi 5 Bookworm

Hi all, I’m running a Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB) with the 16MP IMX519 Autofocus Camera for Raspberry Pi, and I can’t get it to be detected at all. Every time I try a libcamera action it just fails — no image, no preview, and the errors seem to change each run. I’ve been banging my head against this for a while now.

Sorry you’re hitting this. What have you changed in /boot/config.txt so far? For the IMX519 people usually play with camera_auto_detect and the dtoverlay line, so it would help to know exactly what you’ve tried.

I’ve tried camera_auto_detect both on and off, and I’ve tried dtoverlay=imx519 by itself, plus dtoverlay=imx519,cam0 and dtoverlay=imx519,cam1. When I put cam0/cam1 in there (and I even tried cam1/cam2), the camera does seem to get detected and libcamera-hello gets further, but then it throws a bunch of warnings and errors and just times out. I was following the start guide PDF at http://www.arrival.com/downloads/arducam-imx519-start-guide.pdf — I’m starting to think the Pi 5 needs an updated set of instructions.

The Pi 5 definitely handles camera overlays differently than the older boards, so you may well be onto something. Rather than guessing at more config changes, I want to grab a proper diagnostic report so we can see exactly what’s going on under the hood. Can you reboot the Pi first?

Rebooted, all clean. What’s next?

Run these one at a time to download and run the diagnostic tool:

wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
./arducam-camera-bug-report

That will write an arducam-bug-report.txt file in the current directory. Please send that file over to me in a private message so I can dig into the logs.

Okay, ran it and got arducam-bug-report.txt — I’ve sent it to you in a private message. In the meantime I decided to just nuke everything and start over: I did a clean reinstall of Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm and re-followed the camera config steps from scratch. And now… it actually works. The camera gets detected and libcamera-hello opens a preview window.

Glad to hear the clean install sorted the detection part. Can you run libcamera-hello again and paste what comes out? You mentioned earlier there were still some warnings.

Sure. The preview shows up now, but I still get warnings about unsupported v4l formats when I run libcamera-hello. It doesn’t stop the preview, but the warnings are printed every time. Current setup: Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB), 16MP IMX519 Autofocus Camera, Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm (clean reinstall).

Thanks for the update. To summarize where we landed: the original ‘camera not detected’ issue was resolved by a clean reinstall of Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm followed by the standard IMX519 config steps — after that the camera enumerates and libcamera-hello produces a preview. The remaining warnings about unsupported v4l formats are currently non-fatal since the preview still works, but we’re keeping an eye on them. If they start causing dropped frames or the preview fails, we’ll want to revisit the overlay/v4l2 configuration. For now, your working setup is: Raspberry Pi 5 8GB + 16MP IMX519 Autofocus Camera, Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm.
