Hi everyone, I’ve got a Raspberry Pi B+ with 1GB RAM and an Arducam IMX477 camera, and the video capture lags a lot. I’m trying to capture at higher frame rates, around 120 fps. Which Raspberry Pi model is actually supported or best for this? Is the Raspberry Pi 4 B supported, or would a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ with 4GB RAM be the better option?
Thanks for posting. To help narrow this down, could you share a bit more about your setup? Which OS image are you running, what’s in your /boot/config.txt, and what’s the exact camera model/SKU? Also, does the lag happen on the Pi B+ specifically?
Sure. I’m working with two boards:
- Raspberry Pi B+ 1GB RAM
- Raspberry Pi 3 Model B
The camera is an Arducam IMX477, SKU B0241 (UCTRONICS).
On the Pi 3 Model B I’m also getting a ‘camera not detected’ error. I’ve edited /boot/config.txt via sudo nano, changed camera_auto_detect from 1 to 0, added dtoverlay=imx477, then ran sudo raspi-config → 6 Advanced Options → A8 Glamor → enable, and tested with libcamera-still -t 0. Still not detected.
Here’s the error I get: https://cdn.arducam.com/forum/9e9c61e017d87fbce892bb820be743fc/image.png
That screenshot matches the ‘camera not detected’ path. A few things to verify:
- camera_auto_detect must be 0.
- Only one dtoverlay=imx477 line should be in /boot/config.txt.
- Reboot after editing, then test with libcamera-still -t 0 again.
If you added dtoverlay=imx477 more than once, remove the duplicate. Can you post the exact output from libcamera-still -t 0 after a reboot?
I actually added dtoverlay=imx477 in two places in /boot/config.txt because I wasn’t sure which one was correct. Do I need to remove one of them, or change something else? Would it be possible to get a known-good /boot/config.txt file I can use to replace mine in the OS for testing? Also, are there any manuals/files required to run this camera properly?
Remove one of the duplicate dtoverlay=imx477 entries so there’s only a single line, and keep camera_auto_detect=0. Full steps:
- sudo nano /boot/config.txt
- Change camera_auto_detect from 1 to 0
- Add dtoverlay=imx477 (only once)
- sudo raspi-config → 6 Advanced Options → A8 Glamor → enable
- Reboot
- Test with: libcamera-still -t 0
If it still fails, let’s collect diagnostics. After a reboot run:
wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
./arducam-camera-bug-report
That produces arducam-bug-report.txt in the current directory. I’ve sent you a private message with how to get that file to me, please check your messages.
Thanks, I’ll run that and get back to you. One more question while I’m at it - what’s the maximum shutter speed of this IMX477 camera? I need it for some exposure calculations.
For the original hardware question about which Pi is best for 120 fps capture, I can’t give a specific board recommendation here. I’d suggest asking on the Raspberry Pi official forums - they’ll be able to advise better on your requirements: https://forums.raspberrypi.com/
To wrap up the detection issue: the IMX477 needs camera_auto_detect=0 and dtoverlay=imx477 in /boot/config.txt, with Glamor enabled. If it’s still showing ‘camera not detected’ after those steps, send over the arducam-bug-report.txt and I’ll dig into the logs.
