IMX219 camera not detected on Jetson Orin Nano with I2C error (-5)

Hi all, I’ve got an IMX219 camera that suddenly stopped being detected on my Jetson Orin Nano. The exact same camera still works on a Raspberry Pi 4, and it actually used to work on the Orin Nano before it stopped. Now the Orin Nano just doesn’t see the camera at all. Any ideas what could cause this?

Hi, thanks for reaching out. Before we dig in, could you share your full environment info - Jetpack version, L4T/Ubuntu version, and confirm whether the IMX219 driver and the dtb are in place? Also, a couple of pictures showing how the camera is connected to the Orin Nano would help a lot, plus a bug report so we can look at the logs.

Sure, here’s my environment:

  • Nvidia Jetson Orin Nano
  • Jetpack 5.1.3 with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
  • IMX219 driver installed
  • dtb file present

Thanks. Let’s grab a clean bug report. Please do this after a reboot:

  1. Reboot the device.
  2. Download the bug report tool:
wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report-nvidia https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report-nvidia
  1. Make it executable:
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report-nvidia
  1. Run it:
sudo ./arducam-camera-bug-report-nvidia

This will produce an arducam-bug-report.txt file in the current directory.

Once that’s done, please send me the arducam-bug-report.txt file together with the hardware connection photos. I’ll go through both.

While I was looking into this I noticed some devicetree driver errors in the logs, all pointing to I2C problems. The main error looks like I2C error (-5). Here’s the screenshot:

Just to recap the environment again for anyone following:

  • Nvidia Jetson Orin Nano
  • Jetpack 5.1.3 with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
  • IMX219 driver installed
  • dtb file present
  • The Raspberry Pi Camera 15-22 pin cable works
  • The CSI connectors work

I also ran dmesg and pulled the driver errors from the devicetree. Logs are attached, plus these two screenshots:

I’ve also sent the arducam-bug-report.txt through private message as requested. Let me know if you need anything else.

Things I’ve already tried so far:

  • Tested the camera on a Raspberry Pi 4 - it works there
  • Verified the 15-22 pin camera cable and the CSI connectors
  • Generated the arducam-bug-report.txt with the tool

Thanks for the bug report and the photos. Looking through everything, I can see the module you’re using is actually the official Raspberry Pi v2 camera module, not the Arducam IMX219 module. That matters because we can only fully support the Arducam IMX219 here - for the official Raspberry Pi module, official Raspberry Pi support would be the right place.

That said, there are still a couple of things worth ruling out. First, the FFC could be broken or not seated properly. Do you happen to have a 15-22cm FFC from Arducam? If so, try that cable and see if the camera gets detected.

Second, the CSI port on the Jetson itself might be faulty. That’s easy to check - test another camera module on that same port. If other modules also fail on that port, the port is likely the problem.

So no definitive fix yet, but to recap the current conclusion: the module is the official Raspberry Pi v2 camera, and the logs show devicetree driver errors with an I2C error (-5), which usually points to a connection/port issue. Please try these:

  • If you have a 15-22cm FFC from Arducam, swap it in and test
  • Verify the CSI port by testing other camera modules on the same port; if they also fail, the port is likely faulty

Let us know how it goes.
