Hi everyone. I’m trying to install the ArduCam drivers on a Raspberry Pi running Ubuntu 22.04 and the install script keeps failing. I ran the ArduCam driver install script and it generated two files, which I’ve attached along with a screenshot of the error. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, or if it’s something with my setup.
Looking at the screenshot and the two files the install script produced, the issue is the platform itself. Arducam doesn’t support Ubuntu on the Raspberry Pi, and there’s never been a driver released for that combination. The fix is to switch to Raspberry Pi OS instead. Bullseye OS is a good choice here. Flash Bullseye, then run the Arducam driver install on that and it should behave differently.
Thanks for the quick reply. The reason I was on Ubuntu in the first place is that I want to use the camera with ROS, and ROS basically requires Ubuntu. The camera was listed as working on the Raspberry Pi platform and with Ubuntu, so now I’m confused. Is there any way to get it running on the RPi with Ubuntu? Also, would a Jetson Nano board have the same problem?
For ROS, I can’t promise it’ll work. Arducam hasn’t supported ROS for a long time, so there’s no current ROS support to fall back on. For the Jetson side, the camera can work on Jetson Ubuntu OS using the Arducam camera driver, so that’s a better route if you need Ubuntu. Just plan to use the Arducam driver directly rather than relying on ROS support.
Okay, so I switched to a Jetson Nano. It’s running the officially distributed image, which comes with Ubuntu 18.04. I followed the steps at Quick start - Arducam Wiki and ran install_full.sh, but it failed at what looks like the same point as before. I’ve attached a screenshot of the error. What’s the problem now?
Can you check which JetPack/L4T version is on that Nano? The error in the screenshot looks like a version mismatch during the script. If it shows L4T 32.7.4, that’s the likely culprit, because that version isn’t on Arducam’s supported list.
I just checked, and yeah, it’s L4T 32.7.4.
That explains it. L4T 32.7.4 isn’t on the supported list, so install_full.sh fails. You’ll need to burn a JetPack version that is listed as supported in the official Arducam Jetson documentation: Introduction to Arducam Jetson Cameras - Arducam Wiki. Pick one from that supported list, reflash the Nano, and then go through the quick start again. So to sum up: Ubuntu on the Raspberry Pi is unsupported, ROS support has been discontinued, and on the Jetson only the JetPack/L4T versions listed in the docs will work.
