Hey everyone, I’m running into a weird issue with my camera setup and hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I’ve got an Arducam 64MP Auto Focus camera (SKU B0483) connected to a Raspberry Pi 5 through the Arducam LAN Cable Extension Kit (SKU U6248). The problem is that photos come out with duplicate areas — like parts of the image are repeated or ghosted. It’s consistent across every shot.
When I connect the camera directly with a standard ribbon cable (no extension kit), the images are perfect. So it’s definitely something to do with the extension setup. Has anyone seen this before? I’m not even sure where to start troubleshooting.
Welcome to the forum! That’s an odd one — the duplicate/ghosting effect you’re describing makes me think it could be a signal integrity issue over the extension.
A couple of quick things to check first:
What length is the LAN cable you’re currently using with the extension kit?
The extension kit should have come with an original LAN cable in the box — can you test with that one specifically and let me know if the same problem occurs?
Sometimes longer or lower-quality cables can cause data corruption that manifests as duplicated regions in the image.
Thanks for the suggestions. Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
Tested with the original LAN cable that came bundled with the extension kit — still get the duplicate area problem.
Tried a different cable, about 4 meters long — same issue.
Swapped in a few different cameras and ethernet cables with the extension board — all produce the same duplicate-area artifact.
As before, connecting directly via the ribbon cable (bypassing the extension kit completely) works fine every time.
So it doesn’t seem to be tied to a specific cable or a specific camera module. Something about going through the extension boards themselves is causing it. I’ve attached a sample photo showing the duplicate areas.
Thanks for running through all of that — that’s really helpful. The fact that you’ve tested multiple cables (including the original one) and multiple cameras, and the issue follows the extension boards every time, rules out a simple bad-cable scenario. Different cable lengths producing the same result also suggests it’s not a length-related signal degradation issue.
At this point I’d like to check your Pi’s configuration files. There could be something in the camera or display overlay settings that’s not playing nicely with the extension hardware, causing frame buffer or data alignment corruption.
Can you run these two commands and paste the output here?
Depending on your Pi 5’s OS version, one or both of these should exist. This will help us see what overlays and camera-related parameters are currently being loaded.
