Driver installation fails to install dtoverlays on Jetson Xavier NX

Hi, I’m trying to get the Arducam driver installed on a Jetson Xavier NX and the install keeps failing right at the dtoverlays part. It gets through the earlier steps and then errors out and stops. I’ve searched online for the same error but couldn’t find anything that matches, so I’m stuck.

I attached a screenshot of the error since that’s all I’ve got — there’s no text log that I can see, it just throws the message during the install.

Running on a Jetson Xavier NX. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Hi, thanks for posting. Sorry you’re running into this. Before we dig in, a couple of details would help narrow it down a lot:

  1. Is the core board a DEVELOP version or a PRODUCTION version? The dtoverlay install behaves differently depending on which revision of the module you have, so this matters.
  2. What carrier board are you using with the Xavier NX?

If you can also paste the exact error text from the install output (even just the last several lines), that would help pinpoint which step is failing. The screenshot helps but text is easier to read.

Sure, here’s what I’ve got.

The carrier board is an Auvidea JNX30D. Product page with the technical details here: https://auvidea.eu/product/70879/

The install gets through the early steps and then bombs out when it tries to apply the dtoverlays — that’s the part shown in the screenshot. There’s no more output after that, it just fails there.

I haven’t answered the DEVELOP/PRODUCTION question yet because I’m honestly not sure how to tell which one I have. Is there a command to check that?

Also, I searched around for the dtoverlay error and couldn’t find any fix that applies to my situation.

Also, I should have mentioned — I don’t have an official carrier board on hand, the JNX30D is what I’m working with, which is why I was trying the install on this setup.

Thanks, that helps a lot — the carrier board is the key piece here. The Auvidea JNX30D is a third-party carrier board, not one of ours.

Worth explaining why that matters: we only guarantee and test the driver against the official carrier boards. That doesn’t automatically mean it can’t ever work on a third-party board, but a dtoverlay that fails to apply on a non-official carrier is outside what we can debug from our side. The overlay and device tree bits the installer expects are tied to the official board, so a mismatch on a different carrier is expected behavior from our perspective.

So the practical next step is to verify the camera itself is good: put it on the official carrier board version and confirm it comes up there. If it works on the official board, the camera is fine and what you’re seeing is a third-party carrier configuration issue, not a camera or driver defect.

For anything beyond that — actually getting it running on a third-party platform like the JNX30D — you’d need to contact our sales team at [email protected], since third-party platform support is handled there and not through standard support.

Okay, that makes sense, even if it’s not the answer I was hoping for. I don’t have an official carrier board here to test with right now — that’s the whole reason I was trying on the JNX30D.

In the meantime, is there anything I can check myself? Like whether the overlay file the installer is trying to apply actually exists for this board, or whether it’s a path/permissions thing? Or is it just a dead end without the official board?

There isn’t much we can validate remotely on the third-party board without the official reference point, unfortunately. The dtoverlay the installer expects is matched to the official board’s device tree, so on a different carrier a failure to apply it isn’t something we can patch from support — and chasing it on the JNX30D could take you down a rabbit hole that we can’t support.

Best path forward:

  • If you can get access to the official carrier board, flash it and confirm the camera comes up there. That isolates whether the camera itself is good.
  • If the camera works on the official board, the problem is the JNX30D configuration, and that question goes to [email protected] — they can discuss whether third-party support is possible for your setup.
  • If the camera does not work on the official board either, come back to us and we’ll troubleshoot from there.

Short version of where this landed: the install failing at the dtoverlay step on an Auvidea JNX30D is expected on our end, since we only guarantee the official carrier boards. Verify the camera on the official version first, and route anything third-party-platform related to sales.
