Hi all, I’ve got an ArduCAM Mini Camera Module Shield with the 5 MP OV5642 sensor for Arduino. Before I sink any more time into it, does anyone know if this module works with MicroPython, or is it C/Arduino only? Everything I can find seems to be Arduino sketches, but I’d really prefer to stick with MicroPython if that’s actually supported.
Let me look into that specific module for you. One thing I can already confirm: the ArduCAM Mini Camera Module Shield w/ 5 MP OV5642 for Arduino has been discontinued. It’s been replaced/upgraded by a SPI camera version, the ArduCAM Mini Module Camera Shield 5MP Plus OV5642. Here’s the current product page: Arducam Mini Module Camera Shield 5MP Plus OV5642 Camera Module for Arduino UNO Mega2560 Board
For setup and software, these two docs are the ones to check: the ArduCAM Camera Shield Software Application Note (https://www.arducam.com/downloads/shields/ArduCAM_Camera_Shield_Software_Application_Note.pdf) and the OV5642 camera module software application notes (https://www.uctronics.com/download/Image_Sensor/OV5642_camera_module_software_application_notes.pdf). They cover the SPI interface and the sensor configuration flow.
Thanks for the links. I skimmed the shield software note though, and it all looks like Arduino/C examples. Does the upgraded SPI version actually have MicroPython support, or are the notes C-only too? I was hoping to avoid porting a driver by hand.
That’s the part I can’t fully clear up — I don’t have a confirmed MicroPython driver to point you to for either the original OV5642 shield or the upgraded SPI version. The notes I linked are the Arduino/C side of things. The OV5642 note does document the register/config sequence and the SPI protocol in enough detail that you could port it to MicroPython yourself, but that’s not a plug-and-play answer. Since the original module is discontinued, the replacement SPI camera page and those two notes are the best reference I can give you right now.
