Distorted moving objects with Arducam OG02B10 global shutter camera

Hey everyone, I’m having a weird issue with my Arducam 2MP Global Shutter OG02B10 (model B0348, the Pivariety one). I got this camera specifically because it’s global shutter — I need to capture moving objects cleanly. But the images I’m getting are distorted, almost like what you’d see from a rolling shutter camera. The objects look stretched or skewed when they’re in motion. I’ve double-checked and it’s definitely the global shutter model. Has anyone else run into this? Am I missing something in the setup?

This sounds like a configuration issue rather than a hardware defect. Even though the OG02B10 uses a global shutter sensor, if your exposure time is too long relative to the speed of your moving object, you’ll still get motion blur that can look a lot like rolling shutter distortion. Similarly, if the framerate is too low, the camera is essentially spending too much time per frame for fast-moving subjects.

Take a look at the specs here: https://www.arducam.com/arducam-2mp-global-shutter-og02b10-color-camera-modules-pivariety-b0348.html

The key adjustments you need to make are:

  • Reduce the exposure time significantly
  • Increase the camera module’s framerate

Try pushing both as far as your lighting conditions will allow and see if the distortion improves. If you can share your current settings (exposure value, framerate, and what kind of speed your objects are moving at), that would help narrow things down.

Thanks for the suggestions. I spent some time testing with reduced exposure and higher framerate settings but honestly the images are still coming out distorted. I tried a few different combinations — dropping exposure way down, bumping the framerate up, but the QR codes on the moving objects are still unreadable. The distortion is less severe than before, but still there.

What I’m really after here: I need to reliably capture a QR code on an object that’s moving at moderate speed without any distortion. Does anyone have a known-good set of settings for this kind of use case with the OG02B10? I feel like I’m just guessing at this point and wasting time.

Unfortunately there isn’t a one-size-fits-all preset for capturing moving objects — it really depends on your specific scenario: how fast the object is moving, the lighting conditions, the distance, the QR code size, etc.

The core principle remains the same though: you need to keep pushing exposure time down and framerate up until the motion blur disappears. With a global shutter sensor like the OG02B10, once you dial in the exposure short enough, the distortion should go away entirely — global shutter means all pixels are exposed simultaneously, so there’s no rolling shutter skew to contend with.

A few things to double-check while you experiment:

  • Make sure your lighting is bright enough to support very short exposures. If the scene is dim, the camera may be struggling.
  • Confirm that the exposure settings are actually being applied. Sometimes the camera driver or software layer can override manual exposure if auto-exposure is still enabled somewhere.
  • Try capturing at the sensor’s maximum supported framerate with the shortest exposure it allows and work backward from there.

We don’t have a specific demo or reference config for moving object capture with this module, so you will need to iterate on the exposure and framerate values yourself. If you can post your lighting setup and the actual exposure/framerate values you’ve tried so far, I can help you figure out if there’s room to push them further.
