Can't get libcamera to work with UC-755 IMX462 on pi4 with latest PiOS

  1. Where did you get the camera module(s)?
    Amazon

  2. Model number of the product(s)?
    UC-755

  3. What hardware/platform were you working on?
    8gb Raspberry Pi 4 with Raspberry Pi OS Lite - version April 4th 2022

  4. Instructions you have followed. (link/manual/etc.)
    relevant guide on the official website

  5. Problems you were having?
    Installing the pivariety libcamera-dev and libcamera-apps from the scripts in the guide produces the error:

[0:01:20.257335074] [743] ERROR IPAModule ipa_module.cpp:286 ipa_rpi.so: IPA module is not an ELF file

Installing libcamera-dev and libcamera-apps from the precompiled binaries produces the error:

error while loading shared libraries: libboost_program_options.so.1.67.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Compiling libcamera-dev and libcamera-apps from source produces similar errors but with a different missing .so file.

  1. The dmesg log from your hardware?

[ 6.207780] arducam: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.
[ 6.221887] arducam-pivariety 10-000c: firmware version: 0x10002
[ 6.753392] arducam-pivariety 10-000c: Consider updating driver arducam-pivariety to match on endpoints

  1. Troubleshooting attempts you’ve made?
    I’ve followed the guide provided and tried all three methods of installing the libcamera software multiple times. I’ve also checked the troubleshooting section of the guide & googled to see if forum posts contain a solution that helps.

  2. What help do you need?
    I’d like whatever help I need to get the libcamera-dev and libcamera-apps working.

It’s a little weird, the install script should fix these issues
Can you provide the information mentioned in this post?
I need to confirm some information:

By the way, the driver has been installed successfully and the camera has been detected.

Sure, I can do that. I’ll have to break it out into multiple posts because the new user limits on this forum appear to prevent me from posting it all at once. I had to remove the urls from the os-release output for this reason, but they’re just links to debian.

Some settings may impact device functionality. See link above for details

uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default “safe” mode

#hdmi_safe=1

uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if console

goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border

#overscan_left=16
#overscan_right=16
#overscan_top=16
#overscan_bottom=16

uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display’s size minus

overscan.

#framebuffer_width=1280
#framebuffer_height=720

uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being output

#hdmi_force_hotplug=1

uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (this will force VGA)

#hdmi_group=1
#hdmi_mode=1

uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio work in

DMT (computer monitor) modes

#hdmi_drive=2

uncomment to increase signal to HDMI, if you have interference, blanking, or

no display

#config_hdmi_boost=4

uncomment for composite PAL

#sdtv_mode=2

#uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.
#arm_freq=800

Uncomment some or all of these to enable the optional hardware interfaces

dtparam=i2c_arm=on
#dtparam=i2s=on
dtparam=spi=on

Uncomment this to enable infrared communication.

#dtoverlay=gpio-ir,gpio_pin=17
#dtoverlay=gpio-ir-tx,gpio_pin=18

Additional overlays and parameters are documented /boot/overlays/README

Enable audio (loads snd_bcm2835)

dtparam=audio=on

Automatically load overlays for detected cameras

start_x=1

Automatically load overlays for detected DSI displays

display_auto_detect=1

Enable DRM VC4 V3D driver

#dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
max_framebuffers=2

Run in 64-bit mode

arm_64bit=1

Disable compensation for displays with overscan

disable_overscan=1

[cm4]

Enable host mode on the 2711 built-in XHCI USB controller.

This line should be removed if the legacy DWC2 controller is required

(e.g. for USB device mode) or if USB support is not required.

(Error messages when running libcamera were provided in previous post)

You can try to remove the result of manual compilation:

cd libcamera
sudo ninja -C build uninstall

Then run the install script again to install the precompiled libcamera_dev and libcamera_apps
if it reappears

error, you can try to execute

  sudo ln -s /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/libboost_program_options.so /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf/libboost_program_options.so.1.67.0

to fix it.

So I tried running the script on a clean os install and got a similar error message.
I also tried installing the driver on the legacy Raspberry Pi OS with 5.10 kernel as the instructions say this is the one that the driver supports, but it wouldn’t detect the camera at all.

Not sure what else to try at this point.

I think the salient part of the error is:

[0:17:30.328154223] [1771] ERROR IPAModule ipa_module.cpp:286 ipa_rpi.so: IPA module is not an ELF file

When I remove ipa.rpi.so from the directory the script installs it to this error changes to:

149 No IPA found in ‘/usr/local/lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/libcamera’

So I’m thinking maybe the file is corrupt in some way?

Did you replace this file manually?
The manual compiling libcamera instructions on our website are outdated, the ipa_rpi.so provided in the documentation is 32bit, so it doesn’t work.
If you haven’t tried compiling it manually, I think you can send me the link to the SD Card Image you’re using and we’ll test it.

The primary image I’m using is this one, which is the current 64 bit lite install of raspberry pi os.

I’d definitely prefer to use the latest version of the official pi os release, but if you have a known working os image and can link to it here I’m happy to test it out and see if it works.

Got it, we’ll test it

I think we found the problem, you need to enable the i2c interface of the raspberry pi.

sudo raspi-config
     --> Interface Options
          --> I2C

So after reverting to a clean os image, enabling i2c, then following your docs the camera works and is able to record images and video. Thanks for all your help!
