Cannot install Arducam 64MP kernel driver on Navio2 Raspberry Pi 3B+ unsupported kernel version

Hi, I’m trying to set up an Arducam 64MP camera module on my Pi following the official manual (arducam.com/downloads/arducam_64mp_pi_camera_manual.pdf), but I’m stuck at step 4 where it installs the kernel driver. I get an error saying “Cannot find the corresponding package…” and something about using an unsupported kernel version. It also tells me to install the official SD Card Image and not run rpi-update. Anyone seen this before?

Could you share a bit more about your setup? Which Pi board, what OS image, and what kernel version are you running? Also paste the exact command you ran at step 4 and the full error output so we can see what’s actually happening.

Sure. I’m on a Raspberry Pi 3B+, but it’s paired with a Navio2 flight controller card. The OS is the preconfigured Raspberry Pi OS image that ships with the Navio2. Hardware revision is a020d3 and the kernel is 5.10.11-emlid-v7+. I followed the Arducam 64MP manual with no issues until step 4, then ran:

./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver

and got:

Cannot find the corresponding package…
Hardware Revision: a020d3
Kernel Version: 5.10.11-emlid-v7+
Package: 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver – buster
You are using an unsupported kernel version, please install the official SD Card Image (do not execute rpi-update)
https://raspberrypi…

Thanks, that’s the key detail right there. The kernel version is 5.10.11-emlid-v7+ — that’s a custom Emlid kernel that comes with the Navio2 image, not the official Raspberry Pi OS kernel. The Arducam 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver package is built for the official buster kernel/SD image, so the installer script checks the running kernel and rejects anything it doesn’t recognize. That’s exactly why it’s telling you the kernel version is unsupported.

So the driver just won’t install on the Navio2 image at all? Is there any way to make it work without reinstalling the whole OS? I’d really prefer to keep the Navio2 setup if possible.

From what I can tell, there’s no straightforward way to force the installer to accept it — the package expects the official buster SD card image and the driver isn’t compatible with the Navio2/Emlid kernel. The supported path is to burn the latest official Bullseye Raspberry Pi OS image, then run the same step 4 command again:

./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver

But one important caveat: Arducam hasn’t developed or tested against Navio2, so whether the Bullseye image will work properly on your Navio2 setup isn’t confirmed. The Navio2 flight controller likely depends on the custom Emlid image/kernel.

Got it. So basically the Navio2 image’s custom kernel is the blocker, and the only real option for the camera driver is moving to the official Bullseye image — but that could break Navio2 functionality since it hasn’t been tested?

Right. To sum it up: the Arducam 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver package expects the official Raspberry Pi OS image, but your Navio2 runs a preconfigured Emlid OS with the custom 5.10.11-emlid-v7+ kernel, which the installer rejects as unsupported. The workaround would be to burn the latest official Bullseye OS and run the step 4 command again, but Arducam hasn’t developed or confirmed Navio2 compatibility with Bullseye, so that path is unverified. At the moment there’s no supported way to run this camera driver on the Navio2 image itself.
