Cannot get Arducam IMX477 HQ USB camera to work on Jetson Nano

Hi, I’m trying to get an Arducam IMX477 HQ camera working on my Jetson Nano. I’ve got it connected via USB but I just can’t seem to get any image out of it. Has anyone run into this before?

Could you share a bit more about your environment first? Please run uname -a and cat /etc/nv_tegra_release and paste the output here so I can see your kernel and L4T/JetPack version.

Sure, here you go:

uname -a:
Linux dron-desktop 4.9.253-tegra #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Mar 14 02:19:21 UTC 2022 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux

cat /etc/nv_tegra_release:
# R32 (release), REVISION: 7.4, GCID: 33514132, BOARD: t210ref, EABI: aarch64, DATE: Fri Jun 9 04:25:08 UTC 2023

Thanks. Next, can you check whether the system actually sees the camera? Run v4l2-ctl --list-devices and paste what comes back.

I ran v4l2-ctl --list-devices and the camera does show up:

Arducam IMX477 HQ Camera (usb-70090000.xusb-2.1):
/dev/video0

So it’s detected as /dev/video0, but even though it’s listed I can’t preview or capture anything from it.

I also generated a bug report from the Arducam tool in case it helps:

arducam-bug-report.txt

I’ve gone through the bug report and the outputs you posted. First, a quick clarification about Arducam cameras for Jetson, because there are two types:

  1. MIPI camera - this requires installing the camera driver before it will enable and preview.
  2. USB camera - this generally does not need an extra camera driver to preview.

The IMX477 HQ is normally a MIPI camera, but you’re saying you connected it via USB, and v4l2-ctl lists it as Arducam IMX477 HQ Camera (usb-70090000.xusb-2.1) on /dev/video0. I need to confirm which type you actually have before we go any further. Could you share the product page or exact model number of the camera you bought?

Just to summarize where we are from your logs: your kernel is 4.9.253-tegra and L4T is R32.7.4 on a t210ref board, and the camera is being enumerated over USB as /dev/video0. The root cause isn’t determined yet though - the IMX477 HQ is typically a MIPI camera that needs a driver installed, while a true USB camera wouldn’t need one. Once we confirm the exact camera model (MIPI vs USB), we can continue with the correct steps for your setup.
