Cannot find corresponding package installing libcamera_dev on Focal Fossa (d03114, kernel 5.4.51-v7l+)

Hi, I’m trying to install libcamera-dev on my setup and the install just fails. I keep getting this error:

Cannot find the corresponding package, please send the following information to [email protected]

I’m not really sure what’s going on. Any ideas? Here’s the info it spat out:

Hardware Revision: d03114
Kernel Version: 5.4.51-v7l+
Package: libcamera_dev – Focal Fossa

Hi, thanks for the report and for including the environment details, that helps a lot. The ‘Cannot find the corresponding package’ message means the install script couldn’t match your OS to one of the packages we support for libcamera-dev.

Can you confirm which OS and version you’re running on the board? You can run:

cat /etc/os-release
uname -a

and paste the output here. The ‘Focal Fossa’ part in your package line stands out, so I want to double-check what’s actually installed.

Sure, here’s what I get:

$ cat /etc/os-release
NAME=“Ubuntu”
VERSION=“20.04.2 LTS (Focal Fossa)”

$ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 5.4.51-v7l+ #1333 SMP Mon Aug 10 16:51:40 BST 2020 armv7l GNU/Linux

So it’s Ubuntu 20.04 Focal. Does that matter for the libcamera-dev install?

That explains it. The libcamera-dev package (the libcamera_dev variant) is only supported on the OS Bullseye and Buster. On an unsupported OS like Focal Fossa, the installer won’t find a matching package for your environment, which is exactly why you get the ‘Cannot find the corresponding package’ error instead of it installing correctly.

So it’s not something wrong with your board, it’s an OS support mismatch. What OS are you currently booting on the RSP right now?

Yeah it’s Focal Fossa as I pasted above. Hmm, I picked Ubuntu because I was more familiar with it. So there’s no way to get libcamera-dev working on Focal?

Correct, libcamera-dev only supports Bullseye and Buster, so Focal Fossa isn’t going to work no matter how the package is installed. The fix is to switch the OS:

  1. Confirm which OS is actually running on the RSP (as you did, Focal Fossa).
  2. Note that libcamera-dev only supports OS Bullseye and Buster.
  3. Burn the latest Bullseye OS to your SD card.
  4. Boot it up and try installing libcamera-dev again.

Once you’re on Bullseye, the installer should find the matching package and the error should go away. Let me know how it goes after the reflash.

Ok, I’ll flash Bullseye and reinstall. Just to confirm, should I use the latest Bullseye image, or does any Bullseye build work?

Use the latest Bullseye OS image. Older builds may not have the matching kernel/package combination and you could hit other issues, so stick with the newest Bullseye release. Once it’s flashed, run the libcamera-dev install again and it should complete without the ‘Cannot find the corresponding package’ message.

To summarize where we landed: the error was caused by running an unsupported OS (Ubuntu Focal Fossa) on the RSP. libcamera-dev is only supported on Bullseye and Buster, so switching to the latest Bullseye OS is the workaround. If you still see the error after reflashing to Bullseye, post the output here and we’ll take another look.
