Cannot find camera or RTSP stream in Motioneye on Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye

Hi all, I’m trying to use an Arducam camera with Motioneye on a Raspberry Pi running Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye, and I can’t get Motioneye to find the camera at all. I also can’t figure out what RTSP stream address to use. I’ve gone through the Motioneye setup and installed everything I could find, but the camera just never shows up. Does anyone know if Arducam cameras even work with Motioneye?

Hi there, welcome to the forum. Could you tell me the exact Arducam model you’re using? Also worth noting up front: official support for Motioneye has been discontinued, so we’re limited in how much we can help with the Motioneye side specifically. But we can definitely help verify the camera itself is detected properly by the Pi, which is usually the first thing to rule out.

It’s the Arducam 12MP IMX477 with the IR cut filter auto switch. Main use is monitoring a bird nesting box, so I need something that actually streams. I installed everything per the Motioneye setup, but the camera still can’t be found anywhere in it.

Let’s start by checking that the camera is actually recognized by the OS, separate from Motioneye. Can you open /boot/config.txt with: sudo nano /boot/config.txt and add this line under the [all] section at the bottom: dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d,cma-512. Then reboot the Pi. After that, check whether the camera shows up at the OS level before even touching Motioneye.

Done - added the line and rebooted. Still nothing showing up in Motioneye though. The camera still isn’t found.

Motioneye itself is no longer officially supported, so I can’t walk you through fixing detection inside Motioneye directly. But to make sure the camera works natively, I’d suggest starting clean: flash a fresh Raspberry Pi OS image to the SD card and install the camera driver and libcamera from scratch. The Arducam setup info is here: Arducam 12MP IMX477 IR-Cut Filter Auto Switch Camera for Raspberry Pi and the driver install steps are documented here: Quick Start Guide - Arducam Wiki. Once that’s done, check if libcamera can see the camera with a simple capture test.

OK so I reflashed and followed the driver/libcamera install steps. libcamera seems to detect the camera now, but I still can’t get Motioneye to connect to it. It’s like the camera doesn’t support Motioneye at all. That’s a problem because the whole point is the bird nesting box.

I’ve sent you the Arducam bug report tool via private message - please check your messages and run it. It should output a file called arducam-bug-report.txt in the current directory. That will tell us exactly what the system sees. But I want to be honest: for the Motioneye side of things, we may not be able to provide a working solution given that Motioneye support has been discontinued.

Ran the tool and got arducam-bug-report.txt. It shows the camera is there from the OS side, but Motioneye still won’t connect. So at this point I’m stuck - the camera just doesn’t seem to work with Motioneye for my setup.

Based on everything we’ve tried, that’s essentially the conclusion: the camera isn’t supported with Motioneye anymore since official Motioneye support was discontinued, and there’s no RTSP stream address available through that route for this use case. I’m sorry I can’t give you a compatible solution for the bird nesting box using Motioneye. I’d suggest looking at alternative software options, or checking community forums where people have documented what they use for Arducam + streaming setups now.
