Cannot find 64MP Pi Hawk Eye kernel driver package on Bullseye arm64 kernel 5.15.56-v8+

Hi, I’m trying to get my 64MP Pi Hawk-Eye camera working but the install script keeps bailing out. It can’t find the package for my setup. Here’s what I’ve got:

Hardware Revision: d03140
Kernel Version: 5.15.56-v8+
Package: 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver – bullseye-arm64-v5

Anyone know what I’m doing wrong? The camera itself seems fine, it’s the installer that fails.

Can you paste the full output of the install script? The most useful part is the couple of lines near the end that print the hardware revision, kernel version and package name. That info is exactly what the lookup uses to pick a prebuilt driver, so we need to see what it’s actually reporting.

Sure, here’s the output:

Cannot find the corresponding package, please send the following information to support
You are using an unsupported kernel version, please install the official SD Card image (do not execute rpi-update)

And the config it prints is Hardware Revision: d03140, Kernel Version: 5.15.56-v8+, Package: 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver – bullseye-arm64-v5. So it detects my hardware rev fine, but then it drops out on the kernel.

Thanks, that matches what I suspected. The installer maps your hardware rev + kernel + package combo to a prebuilt kernel module. Your kernel 5.15.56-v8+ is newer than the kernels we currently build against, so the lookup for 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver (bullseye-arm64-v5) comes back empty and it falls through to that ‘unsupported kernel version’ message.

So the missing package is the real blocker here, not your camera.

Okay, so how do I get onto a supported kernel? I saw some people mentioning rpi-update to bump the kernel version around. Would that help, or do I need to go the other way and downgrade?

Don’t run rpi-update — that pulls a bleeding-edge kernel and will make this worse. That’s exactly what the warning in the output is telling you to avoid.

The fix is to flash the official Raspberry Pi OS image instead, which ships with a supported kernel:

Once you’re on the stock image, run the installer again. If the lookup still fails, you’ll need to forward the config details (hardware revision, kernel version, package) to the support team so we can build the matching package. I’ve sent you a note privately with where to send those details.

Quick question before I wipe anything — I already submitted a ‘configuration change request’ for hardware rev d03140 along with my kernel and package info. Is that the right path, or do I still need to reflash? I’d rather not redo my whole setup if there’s a package coming.

That request is exactly what we need — it tells our build system which combo is missing so we can produce the package for it. So you’ve done the right thing there.

You’ve got two options: wait for the package update (the team is rebuilding now and it should land today — I’ll drop you a message here as soon as it’s done), or move to the official image now if you don’t want to wait. Either way, do not run rpi-update.

Got it — I’ll hold off on reflashing for now and wait for the package update. Appreciate the help, I’ll keep an eye out for your message.

Summary of where we landed:

  • Issue: 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver (bullseye-arm64-v5) can’t be found for hardware rev d03140 on kernel 5.15.56-v8+, because the lookup has no prebuilt module for that kernel combo.
  • Root cause: the unsupported kernel version (5.15.56-v8+) is blocking the package lookup — the package isn’t missing from your config, it just doesn’t exist yet for that kernel.
  • Workaround: do NOT execute rpi-update. Install the official Raspberry Pi OS image from Raspberry Pi OS downloads – Raspberry Pi to get a supported kernel, then re-run the installer.
  • If the lookup still fails on a supported setup, send the hardware revision, kernel version and package name to the support team.
  • The package update to cover this combo is in progress and should be released shortly. I’ll follow up in this thread once it’s available.
