Can I change lenses on B0273 cameras despite the warning?

Hey everyone, I’m putting together a project that uses two B0273 cameras. While I was going through the docs I spotted a warning saying changing the lenses is not recommended. Now I’m second-guessing myself. Is swapping the lenses actually possible on these, or is this one of those ‘don’t even try it’ situations? Just want to know before I commit to anything.

Hi, welcome to the forum. A bit more info would help. How many units are you working with, and what kind of lens are you trying to put on? Also, have you worked with M12 lens cameras before? That changes how much detail I give you.

Sure, it’s two B0273 cameras for this project. I’ve worked with M12 cameras quite a bit before, so I’m comfortable doing a lens swap myself if it’s actually feasible. My main question is whether this needs any special tools, or if it’s just a matter of being gentle with the threads.

Good to know you’ve handled M12 lenses before. On these units the stock lens is usually secured with a small amount of thread-locking glue. It’s not a permanent bond, but it does mean you can’t just spin the lens off freely - you typically need to break that glue first. A lens wrench / M12 spanner helps a lot here because it gives you even torque without stressing the barrel. You can do it carefully by hand, but the risk is slipping and scratching the lens or the mount. So it’s not strictly ‘special tools required’, but a proper wrench makes it much safer.

Got it. So is there any trick to it, or a reason they specifically say it’s not recommended? Like, is it actually impossible to get a clean focus afterwards? I’d rather not ruin both cameras right before the project starts, so I just want to understand what I’d be signing up for.

Right, the ‘not recommended’ part is mostly because the factory focus is set and then glued, so once you break that glue you’re fully responsible for re-focusing. There’s no official focus target or procedure published for these units, and breaking the glue can leave debris that ends up on the sensor. It’s not impossible - people swap M12 lenses all the time - but the manufacturer won’t support it and any dust or alignment issue after the swap is on you. Given your M12 experience it’s doable: gently break the glue, swap slowly while keeping the sensor covered as much as possible, and re-focus on a test chart. But I’d only do it if you can afford to test on one unit first. Since you haven’t performed the swap yet, my conclusion is: physically possible, proceed at your own risk, and there’s no official guidance available for the re-focus step. If you go ahead, report back and we can troubleshoot focus from there.
