Hey everyone, having a weird issue with my PiVistation B0502. The camera was working fine until I ran sudo apt-get update earlier today. Now the camera just isn’t detected at all. Any idea what could have happened? I didn’t really read any of the warnings or tips before running the update, so maybe I messed something up there.
Can you tell us a bit more about your setup? What hardware are you running on, and have you made any other changes recently besides the apt update? Any error messages in dmesg or syslog would be helpful too if you can grab those.
It’s a PiVistation B0502. I literally just ran sudo apt-get update, let it do its thing, and after a reboot the camera was gone. I haven’t tried any restoration steps yet because honestly I’m not sure where to start. Is there a factory reset procedure for this thing? I don’t have any logs handy but I can pull them if needed.
Okay, this is actually a known issue with the PiVistation B0502. The device ships with a custom system image that includes proprietary camera drivers and a specific software stack configured at the factory level. When you run sudo apt-get update, the standard Raspbian/Raspberry Pi OS packages can overwrite or conflict with those custom camera drivers, which is exactly why your camera is no longer detected.
Unfortunately, there’s no quick fix or package reinstall that will sort this out. The only reliable way to restore camera functionality is to re-flash the SD card with the official PiVistation custom image.
Ah, that makes sense now. Wish I’d known that before hitting update! So how do I go about re-flashing it? Where do I even get the factory image?
Here’s the process:
-
Download the official PiVistation custom system image from SourceForge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/pivistation-5/files/B0502_B0504/
-
Download and install the Raspberry Pi Imager tool from: https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/
-
Use the Raspberry Pi Imager to flash the downloaded image onto your SD card.
Once that’s done, pop the SD card back in and boot up. It should be back to factory defaults with full camera functionality restored.
And just to reiterate for anyone reading this later — the PiVistation B0502 (and B0504) run a custom image that really shouldn’t be updated through the standard apt channels. The camera stack depends on drivers and configs that aren’t in the upstream repos, so apt-get update/upgrade will happily replace them with incompatible versions. If the camera stops working after an update, re-flashing is your only path back. No partial fix or driver reinstall will cut it.
Got it, downloading both now. I’ll report back once I’ve flashed the card and tested everything. Thanks for the clear explanation — definitely going to bookmark that SourceForge page and steer clear of apt-get update on this device from now on.
