Camera not found by libcamera on Raspberry Pi 4B with Arducam B0309

Hey everyone, I just installed the Arducam B0309 on my Raspberry Pi 4B and the camera doesn’t respond to libcamera at all. Running the libcamera command gives me a ‘camera not found’ error. I’m running libcamera with the B0309. Has anyone else hit this right after a fresh install?

Thanks for the details. Before I can dig into why the camera isn’t being detected, I need some diagnostic info from your setup. Can you do the following?

  1. Reboot the Pi.
  2. Download the bug report tool:
wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report
  1. Make it executable:
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
  1. Run it:
./arducam-camera-bug-report

That generates a file called arducam-bug-report.txt in the current directory. Send me that file through private message so I can analyze it.

Quick follow-up — it looks like you only did the first three steps and stopped. You still need to complete steps 4 and 5: actually run ./arducam-camera-bug-report, then send me the generated arducam-bug-report.txt file. I can’t move forward on the camera-not-found issue without that report.

Sorry about that, my bad. I ran the bug report tool and I’ve sent the arducam-bug-report.txt file over via private message. I also reseated the ribbon cable while I was at it — silver connector facing the HDMI port, as per the instructions.

I’ve sent you a screenshot with the configuration steps through private message. Please follow those steps and then reboot the Raspberry Pi so the changes take effect. Once it’s back up, try the libcamera command again to see if the camera gets detected.

Okay, I edited config.txt following your steps and then ran libcamera-hello. Here’s the output — does this mean it’s fixed now?

Can you actually see the preview window when that runs? If you don’t have a monitor connected to the Raspberry Pi, you can save a still image instead with:

libcamera-still -t 5000 -o test.jpg

That stores an image to a file so you can verify the camera is working without a preview window.

No, I don’t see any preview window at all — I’m connecting over Putty with a headless setup. I can get pictures using libcamera-jpeg, but libcamera-still doesn’t work for me. Is there some package out there that lets you see the camera preview over a headless connection?

Just so I understand — when you say you can ‘get’ pictures with libcamera-jpeg, do you mean you’re able to save image files, or are you trying to preview the camera live? It’s unusual for libcamera-jpeg to work while libcamera-still doesn’t, so I want to make sure we’re talking about the same thing.

As for showing a preview window on a headless OS — that’s a bit outside what I can help with here. You’d probably have better luck asking about headless preview setups over on the Raspberry Pi forum.
