Hi, I’m running a Raspberry Pi 4 with Buster (OS 10) and two HQ camera IMX477 modules connected through a Camarray HAT. I’m trying to combine the two camera scenes into one frame, but the camera app won’t start. vcgencmd get_camera reports supported=1 detected=1, but then I get:
mmal: mmal_vc_component_enable: failed to enable component: ENOSPC
mmal: camera component couldn't be enabled
mmal: main: Failed to create camera component
mmal: Failed to run camera app. Please check for firmware updates
Your OS is the first problem. Arducam doesn’t support Buster at all, so you need to be on Bullseye. Flash a Bullseye image and test there first. That mmal ENOSPC failure when enabling the camera component usually points to the camera stack not matching the OS/kernel.
Okay, I moved to Bullseye and a single camera works fine now. But as soon as I attach the Camarray HAT with both cameras I just get a solid black preview. I’m starting to suspect a bug in the Camarray module.
I also ran ./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p kernel_driver and got:
Hardware Revision: b03111
Kernel Version: 4.19.118-v7l+
Package: kernel_driver -- buster
Cannot find the corresponding package, please send the following information to [email protected]
You are using an unsupported kernel version, please install the official SD Card image(do not execute rpi-update)
vcgencmd get_camera still shows supported=1 detected=1.
One thing I notice in that log: kernel 4.19.118-v7l+ and ‘Package: kernel_driver – buster’. That’s still a Buster-era kernel - Bullseye should be on 5.10/5.15, so double-check your image actually updated. But for the black preview there’s also a separate hardware issue: the Camarray HAT needs the reduced-data-rate IMX477 cameras that ship in the Synchronized Stereo Camera Bundle Kit. The separately sold IMX477 modules are not the same part - they run at full data rate, and the HAT can’t sync two of them, which is why you get a black frame. You need the cameras that come with the bundle kit, not standalone IMX477s.
My project is about studying sunlight, so I need 180° FOV and the cameras must capture in parallel, not one after the other. That’s exactly why I used the Camarray HAT - a regular adapter runs cameras in sequence.
Is there any way to make a separately sold IMX477 HQ module with a 180° fisheye lens work with the Camarray HAT? Or am I stuck with the bundled cameras only?
I’d go with the B0265R Synchronized Stereo Camera Bundle Kit. The IMX477 in that kit is the reduced-data-rate version the Camarray HAT expects. Standalone IMX477 modules won’t give you a usable synced preview on the HAT. You’ll still need to match the lens to whatever mount that kit uses if you want 180° FOV.
Thanks. What about the B0397 Quadrascopic Camera Bundle Kit? I need to sync four cameras and I want the 180° FOV from the image I attached. Can I attach a fisheye lens to the B0397 to reach that FOV? I’m not sure which fisheye lens would fit.
I’m not sure I follow the fisheye part - do you mean swapping the lenses that come on the B0397 for a separate fisheye lens, or adding a fisheye lens bundle onto the HQ cameras? The final FOV depends entirely on the lens you use. If you can point me to the exact fisheye lens, I can check whether it mounts on the B0397’s cameras.
I want a fisheye lens for the HQ camera (IMX477) that gives the 180° output shown in the image. Can you confirm the B0397 kit can produce that with a fisheye lens attached? I also found an Arducam Autofocus Quad-Camera Synchronized kit, but that one uses IMX519 sensors, which isn’t what I need for this.
Right, skip the IMX519 quad kit - it’s a different sensor and won’t match what you’re doing. The B0397 is IMX477-based, which is what you want. Whether it gives a true 180° comes down to the specific fisheye lens and its mount. If you share the exact lens model you’re planning to use, I can verify the mount and FOV against the B0397 before you commit.
I need 3 of the B0397 kits for this project. I’d like to test one unit first to confirm the fisheye lens gives 180° FOV and the four-camera sync works before ordering the other two. Can you confirm the lens details for the first unit so I can test it?
To summarize where we are: Buster is out - you need Bullseye, which fixed the single camera. The Camarray/quad HATs only sync with the reduced-data-rate IMX477 modules that ship in the bundle kits; standalone IMX477s give a black frame because of the full data rate. For the B0397, the fisheye lens compatibility still needs the exact lens model/mount to be confirmed for 180° FOV. Testing one unit first is a reasonable way to verify the sync and FOV before ordering the rest.
