Black preview and camera timeouts with 4x IMX219 on Arducam multi-camera adapter Raspberry Pi

Hi everyone, I’m stuck with the Arducam multi-camera adapter board (B012001) and 4x IMX219 cameras. I’ve been following the docs at Multi-Camera Solution - Arducam Wiki but the preview window just stays black. I’ve tried it on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ and a Raspberry Pi 4B, same result on both. The terminal keeps throwing errors like:

Dequeue timer of 1000000.00us has expired!
Camera frontend has timed out!
Please check that your camera sensor connector is attached securely.
Alternatively, try another cable and/or sensor.
ERROR: Device timeout detected, attempting a restart!!!

I’ve never managed to get the multi-camera module working at all. Has anyone run into this before?

Quick update on what I already checked before posting: I tested all 4 IMX219 modules one by one on the Raspberry Pi 4B’s native CSI port and they all work perfectly, even with different cables. WiringPi is installed as the docs require. So the individual cameras and cables seem fine on their own - the problem only shows up when I go through the adapter board.

Thanks for the detailed report. The fact that each camera works fine on its own but fails through the multiplexer board is useful - it narrows things down quite a bit. Could you post a few photos of the hardware connections? Both the Raspberry Pi end and the camera end would help.

Also, could you generate the Arducam bug report so I can look at the logs? Steps:

  1. Reboot your device.
  2. Download the bug report tool:
    wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/Dion4cen/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/Tool/arducam-camera-bug-report
  3. Set executable permissions:
    chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
  4. Run it:
    ./arducam-camera-bug-report

It will write an ‘arducam-bug-report.txt’ file in the current directory. Attach that here and I’ll dig into it.

Here are the connection photos and the bug report file.

Let me know if you need a different angle or closer shots.

Thanks, I’ve gone through the photos and the bug report. Right now I can’t tell yet whether the failure is on the multiplexer board itself or specific to the IMX219 sensors. To isolate it, do you have access to a camera with a different sensor - something like an IMX477 or IMX708? If you connect that to the multiplexer board and run the same test, it will help us determine whether the board is the problem or whether it’s sensor-related.

I managed to get hold of a Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 with the Sony IMX708 sensor and ran a new test through the adapter board. I’ve generated a fresh bug report with that setup attached here:

arducam-bug-report.txt

Same black preview as far as I can tell, but the report should show what’s happening.

I can also post more photos of the current setup with the Camera Module 3 if that helps. Just checking - any news from the last bug report?

Thanks for the updated report - I’m still working through it. To summarise where we are: all 4 IMX219 modules work individually on the Pi’s own CSI port, but both the IMX219 and the IMX708 fail with the timeout errors when going through the B012001 adapter board. That points the investigation toward the adapter board itself, but I don’t have a confirmed cause yet. Photos of the current IMX708 setup would be helpful when you get a chance, and I’ll update you as soon as I have something from the latest bug report.
