B0333 IMX462 camera not working on Raspberry Pi OS 6.1 kernel

Hi everyone, hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I’ve got an Arducam B0333 with the IMX462 sensor (bought from UCTRONICS) and it’s completely dead on my Raspberry Pi. I’ve tried a few of my other camera modules and they work fine, so I’m pretty sure it’s a driver issue with this specific sensor. The Pi is running Raspberry Pi OS: Linux version 6.1.0-rpi7-rpi-v8 ([email protected]) (gcc-12 (Debian 12.2.0-14) 12.2.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.40) #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 1:6.1.63-1+rpt1 (2023-11-24). The camera doesn’t even get detected when I try libcamera. I’m willing to downgrade the OS if that’s what it takes, but I’d really rather keep my current setup if possible. Anyone else hit this?

Thanks for the details. Looking at your kernel version, this looks like a driver incompatibility with the current Raspberry Pi OS kernel. The B0333 / IMX462 is one of the Pivariety cameras, and those are picky about kernel versions. The most reliable workaround right now is to downgrade the kernel by flashing Bullseye OS with kernel 6.1.21 onto your SD card. After that, follow the Pivariety camera setup guide here: Quick Start Guide - Arducam Wiki. That should get the camera recognized. I know it’s not ideal, but it’s the known-good combination for this sensor at the moment.

Honestly, downgrading to Bullseye isn’t really an option for me right now. I need this camera working on my current setup fairly soon, and rebuilding the whole Pi around an older OS would mess up other things I have running. The camera was advertised as compatible, so I’m a bit frustrated that it just doesn’t work out of the box. Can someone explain why the drivers aren’t updated/compatible with the current Raspberry Pi OS, and is there any timeline for when they will be? I’d rather wait for a proper fix than rip my system apart.

I understand, let’s see if we can get more info without making you downgrade. First, have you already walked through the Pivariety camera Quick Start Guide on Bookworm to make sure the configuration is right? If you have and it’s still dead, we’ll need a diagnostic report to figure out what’s actually failing on your current OS. Here’s how to collect one: reboot the device, then run these commands:

wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report

chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report

./arducam-camera-bug-report

That will generate an arducam-bug-report.txt file in the current directory. If you can attach that here (or send it over), I can take a look and we’ll go from there. The report pulls together the kernel/driver state and should tell us whether it’s a config problem or a genuine driver gap on this kernel.

I had gone through the guide, but I’ll run through it again just to be safe. I just ran the bug report tool and it produced the arducam-bug-report.txt file. I’ve attached it to this post. Hopefully it shows something obvious.

Got it, thanks for running that. From what we’ve discussed so far, the immediate workaround remains flashing Bullseye OS with kernel 6.1.21, since that’s the known-good combination for the B0333/IMX462. That said, since you can’t downgrade, the bug report will let us check whether the driver is loading correctly on your current 6.1.0-rpi7-rpi-v8 kernel and whether there’s a configuration step we can fix instead. I’ll go through the report and get back to you with next steps once I’ve had a chance to analyze it. If it does turn out to be a missing driver update for this kernel, we’ll need to escalate that to get a compatibility fix scheduled.
