Hi everyone, having an autofocus problem with the 16MP IMX519 (B0371) camera. After installing the driver, autofocus doesn’t work at all. I’ve tested two units, and even running just one IMX519 camera on its own it still won’t focus. What’s weird is that autofocus worked fine when I first set it up on 2024/2/6. I checked the driver list and see new releases from 2/21 and 2/27. Is there any way to get install_pivariety_pkgs.sh to install a version from before 2024/02/21? I’m wondering if one of the newer drivers broke focusing.
That sounds like a known issue. With libcamera 2.21, the Pi + B0371 (imx519) combination has a focus problem caused by a software conflict, and it was fixed in the 2/27 build. Running install_pivariety_pkgs.sh now should install the 2/27 libcamera by default. Once it’s done, verify what version you actually have with: dpkg -l | grep libcamera. If it still reports 2.21, the update didn’t take and we can dig from there.
Thanks for that. I installed libcamera_dev and libcamera_apps using install_pivariety_pkgs.sh, but focus is still not working. When I look at v4l2, it can’t find subdev6 — I think that might be the focus module. My setup is Raspberry Pi OS from the official Raspberry Pi imager, and uname -r shows 6.1.0-rpi8-rpi-2712. I also ran sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade but the version doesn’t change. Is there a working image file I can flash instead, or another update method? Which OS source should I download for Arducam?
Thanks for the extra info. The libcamera error you’re seeing actually points to the camera’s focus motor being broken, which is a hardware problem rather than the libcamera software version — consistent with what we’re seeing on the two units you’ve tested. Before we go further, can you confirm whether the camera was connected to the Pi 5 with the Raspberry Pi FFC or the Arducam FFC? Also, since you asked about a working image, I’ve sent you a link privately so you can rule out an OS-level problem.
The connection is the Arducam FFC — UC376, the one included in the box. We have a batch of these B0371 cameras and so far I’ve only opened and tested 2 of them. Should I open and test the rest for focus, or is there something else worth checking first?
Since you’re using the Arducam FFC (UC376), the cable should be fine. For the two units you’ve opened — do both show the exact same focus failure? Also, is the Pi running on the official Raspberry Pi power supply? If you can, test three more cameras with the same setup (Pi 5 + B0371 + UC376) and see whether they all fail the same way. So far the symptoms point to a hardware issue with the focus motor, and testing a few more units will help confirm whether it’s limited to these two or affects the whole batch.
