Arducam TOF preview windows black and blue flashing on Raspberry Pi 4B via RealVNC

Hi all, I’m stuck with the Arducam Time-of-Flight Camera on a Raspberry Pi 4B. I’m running the latest 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS and followed the online documentation, but I’ve never actually gotten it working. Whenever I run any of the examples, the preview windows pop up, but one is solid black and the other is blue with flashing pixels. I’ve already gone through all the commands on the troubleshooting page. Is there any other troubleshooting info out there? Has anyone else seen this exact thing?

Thanks for the report. It would help to see exactly what the preview windows look like when the app starts. Can you start the TOF application from the terminal and share a short screenshot or screen recording? Also let me know the environment details: Pi model, OS version, and how you’re viewing the desktop (HDMI, VNC, etc.).

Sure. It’s the Arducam ToF Camera with a Raspberry Pi 4B, latest 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS, and I’m viewing it through RealVNC Viewer. The camera has never worked properly. I started the app from the terminal and captured a screen recording of the issue - I’ve attached it so you can see. In the recording you’ll see one preview window is solid black and the other is blue with flashing pixels; the output is basically unintelligible.

Thanks, I’ve watched the recording. Based on the symptoms and some very similar cases we’ve handled, this is almost always a power problem. The ToF module draws extra current, and if the Pi’s supply can’t keep up, you get exactly this kind of black/blue flashing preview output. Please connect your Raspberry Pi to a proper 5V 3A power supply and then run the examples again. If the preview is still garbled after that, post back and we can keep troubleshooting.
