Arducam SEN-19512 probe failed on Raspberry Pi 3 B+ Buster/Bullseye

Hi, I’m having trouble getting my Arducam camera working and I’m running out of ideas. After I install the kernel driver, dmesg | grep arducam always shows probe failed and it never works properly.

Product: SEN-19512 (Raspberry Pi Cameras series)
Platform: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Plus Rev 1.3 — tried both Buster and Bullseye (various versions, particularly the ones in the docs)
Guide I followed: Redirecting...

Things I’ve already tried:

  • Checked the camera connection at both ends, disconnected and reconnected on both ends.
  • Tried several versions of both Bullseye and Buster.
  • I have another older camera that DOES work on this same pi with raspistill and raspivid, so the pi itself seems fine.

Is there anything else I can do to confirm the camera and connections are ok? How do I know for sure it’s not just a software/OS/package issue?

Hi, thanks for the details. Let’s start from a known-good baseline so we can rule out OS/package issues.

Please use Bullseye for now, then walk through the Pivariety unboxing tutorial here:
https://www.arducam.com/docs/cameras-for-raspberry-pi/pivariety/unboxing-video-pivariety-camera/

When you’re done, please run our bug-report script so we can see exactly what your system and camera are reporting:

wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
./arducam-camera-bug-report

This will output an arducam-bug-report.txt in the current directory. Please send that file as an attachment so I can analyze it.

Thanks, I grabbed your tool and ran the commands. The file it produced is attached below — hopefully this shows what’s going wrong.

Thanks! I think there was a mix-up though — the file you sent isn’t the one we need. What I actually need is the arducam-bug-report.txt that the bug-report script generates in your current directory. Could you attach that specific file? That’s the one that has the system and camera info I need to diagnose the probe failure.

Oops, my bad — I attached the wrong file before. Here’s the correct one this time.

Got it, thanks. To keep diagnosing this ‘probe failed’ issue, I’d like to rule out the physical side. Could you send me a hardware connection diagram — basically photos or a clear diagram of how the camera is connected to the Pi? That helps me spot anything wrong with the wiring before we go further into software.

Only the Arducam is connected to the pi, nothing else.

Is there a tool to generate a hardware connection diagram? I’m not sure what exactly you want, but I’ve attached a couple of photos of how it’s wired up.

Thanks, the photos help. Looking at your setup, I can see you’re actually using the IMX519 — that’s our 16MP camera. That changes things: the Pivariety unboxing guide you were following isn’t the right one for this camera, which is likely why the probe keeps failing.

Please follow the libcamera-based guide for the 16MP camera instead:
https://www.arducam.com/docs/cameras-for-raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-libcamera-guide/how-to-use-arducam-16mp-camera-on-rapberry-pi/

Just keep in mind you’re using the imx519 camera, so follow that guide specifically. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

That did it — all working now! Following the IMX519 libcamera guide got the camera up and running. Thanks so much for the help.

Great to hear it’s working! For anyone finding this thread later, the root cause was using the wrong setup guide — the Pivariety unboxing tutorial instead of the correct IMX519 libcamera one. Following the Arducam 16MP (IMX519) libcamera guide here:
https://www.arducam.com/docs/cameras-for-raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-libcamera-guide/how-to-use-arducam-16mp-camera-on-rapberry-pi/
resolved the probe failure and got the camera working. If anything else comes up, feel free to reply here and we’ll take another look.
