Arducam Pivariety 16MP IMX298 camera on Raspberry Pi 4: IPA module raspberrypi can't find arducam-pivariety.json

Hi all, I’m having trouble with an Arducam Pivariety 16MP IMX298 Color Motorized Focus Camera Module on a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. I’ve honestly never managed to get it working. Whenever I try to run the camera, libcamera throws this:

IPAProxy ipa_proxy.cpp:149 Configuration file 'arducam-pivariety.json' not found for IPA module 'raspberrypi'

I’ve already tried every solution suggested in the Arducam documentation and nothing has fixed it. Any ideas what’s going wrong?

Welcome, and thanks for the detailed report. That error is basically libcamera telling you it can’t find the IPA configuration file for the pivariety camera module, so the pipeline fails before the camera can even start.

Before we go further, can you confirm a few things about your setup:

  • Raspberry Pi model and OS version (and whether it’s 32-bit or 64-bit)
  • How you installed the Arducam drivers/libcamera (which guide or scripts you used)

That’ll help me figure out where the config file should have been placed.

Sure. It’s a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. I followed the camera datasheet instructions for the installation. I don’t remember the exact OS version off the top of my head, but it’s a fairly recent Raspberry Pi OS image.

Thanks. Let’s collect a full diagnostic report so I can see exactly what’s missing on your system. Please reboot the Pi, then run these commands:

wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
./arducam-camera-bug-report

This will generate an arducam-bug-report.txt in the current directory. Please attach that file to your next reply, and include a screenshot of the terminal output if you can.

Done. I rebooted and ran the commands exactly as posted:

wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
./arducam-camera-bug-report

The tool produced arducam-bug-report-1.txt. I’ve attached it below along with a screenshot of the output.

arducam-bug-report-1.txt

Thanks for the report and screenshot — I’ve got them. I’m going through the arducam-bug-report.txt now. That file bundles the relevant camera config, kernel info and libcamera logs into one place, which is exactly what’s needed to trace why arducam-pivariety.json isn’t being found by the IPA module.

So far the root cause isn’t pinned down yet; I’m still analyzing the collected data. I’ll follow up here as soon as I have a concrete finding or next step for you.
