Hi everyone, I can’t get my ArduCAM 2MP Plus OV2640 (RB-Adu-10 ArduCAM Mini-Kameramodul mit 2MP Plus OV2640 für Arduino) to produce any image at all and I’m stuck.
My setup:
Board: ESP32 D1 Mini Nodemcu
Camera: ArduCAM 2MP Plus OV2640 (RB-Adu-10)
Sketch: the ArduCam_ESP8266_OV2640_capture example, slightly modified so it runs on the ESP32 D1 Mini
With this 2MP module I get no image whatsoever out of the example sketch. To rule out a problem with my hardware or software I bought an additional ArduCAM 5MP OV5642 Mini, and that one runs perfectly on the exact same hardware with the ArduCam_ESP8266_OV5642_capture sketch.
So the ESP32, the wiring and my toolchain seem fine, and only the 2MP OV2640 stays dead. Before I chase this any further, is there anything obvious I’m missing, or does this point to a faulty 2MP module? I just want to make sure it’s really the camera and not my sketch mods.

So to summarize what you’re seeing: the ArduCAM 2MP Plus OV2640 (product RB-Adu-10) does not work with the ArduCam_ESP8266_OV2640_capture example, which you modified to run on the ESP32 D1 Mini Nodemcu. On the same hardware the ArduCAM 5MP OV5642 works fine with the ArduCam_ESP8266_OV5642_capture sketch. Since the 5MP works and the 2MP doesn’t on identical hardware, I understand why you suspect the 2MP module.
Before we conclude anything, I’d like to rule out a platform/porting issue rather than a hardware fault.
Could you try the 2MP Plus OV2640 on the arduino_uno (Arduino Uno) platform? If it shows the same problem there, please contact us again and we’ll take it from there.

Thanks Dion. I don’t actually have an Arduino Uno available, unfortunately.
But I did test the 2MP camera across basically every platform I own, so I don’t think it’s a single-board issue:
Teensy 4.1
Teensy 4.0
ESP32
ESP32 D1 Mini Nodemcu
ESP32-DevkitC v4
On all of these the 5MP Cam is working, and on all of these the 2MP does not work. Same sketches as before, same wiring, only the camera module changes. That’s why I’m fairly convinced the 2MP module itself is the problem.
Is there anything else you’d like me to try on these boards, since an Uno isn’t an option for me?
Adding to the above — is there any chance the OV2640 needs something different in the sketch compared to the 5MP, or a different pin mapping? I keep wondering if I’m just missing a step. I’d really like to get this working rather than keep swapping cameras.
No worries, I’ll try my best to help you get to the bottom of this.
Given that you’ve already tested the 2MP Plus OV2640 on the Teensy 4.1, Teensy 4.0, ESP32, ESP32 D1 Mini Nodemcu and ESP32-DevkitC v4 — with the 5MP working and the 2MP failing on all of them — we still can’t yet tell whether it’s the module or something in the software setup. To move forward I need one more detail.
Could you describe a bit more precisely what happens with the 2MP? And importantly, please open the serial monitor window while running the ArduCam_ESP8266_OV2640_capture sketch (your ESP32 mod) with the 2MP module attached, and paste the exact output you see there — the full error message, including any init/register errors or garbage output.
That serial output is the key missing piece here. Once I can see exactly what the 2MP reports during init, I can tell whether this points to the 2MP module itself or to the port/sketch, and we can decide the next step. Don’t worry, we’ll work through it together.
