Arducam IMX708 Camera Module 3 not detected on Raspberry Pi 4B

Hi, I’ve got an Arducam Camera Module 3 (12MP IMX708, 75° autofocus Pi Camera V3) hooked up to a Raspberry Pi 4B using the 15-22 pin FFC cable, and it’s never worked since I got it. The Pi doesn’t seem to see the camera at all — it keeps saying the camera is not supported or detected no matter what I try. I’m on a Raspberry Pi 4B. Any ideas where to start?

Let’s start with the basics. Can you post a couple of photos of the connection — one at the Raspberry Pi end and one at the camera module end? Also, please generate a diagnostic bug report so I can see what’s going on.

Reboot the Pi, then run these:

wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/Dion4cen/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/Tool/arducam-camera-bug-report
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
./arducam-camera-bug-report

That will create an arducam-bug-report.txt file in the current directory. Send that file over along with the photos.

I ran those commands and it generated some output. I’ve attached 10 screenshots showing the command output and the hardware connection. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for the screenshots. Two things I noticed:

  1. I don’t see the arducam-camera-bug-report.txt file attached anywhere — I only got the screenshots. I need that txt file itself.
  2. From the photos, the FFC cable doesn’t look like it’s seated stably in the connector, so the contacts may not be making good connection.

Please reseat the cable on both ends, make sure it’s pushed in straight and the connector is locked down, and then send the arducam-camera-bug-report.txt file as an attachment.

How do I attach/send the generated bug report file? I’m not sure I’m sending the right thing.

The file should be named arducam-bug-report.txt and it should be in /home/pi (assuming you ran the tool from there). Just attach that exact file to your reply.

I reconnected the cable like you said, but it’s the same problem — no camera is supported or detected. I’ve attached 2 screenshots. Also, is the file I sent the correct one? It was located in /home/pi.

Yes, if it’s arducam-bug-report.txt from /home/pi, that’s the right file. Next, let’s make sure the software side is set up correctly for this module. Please follow the steps here:

https://docs.arducam.com/Raspberry-Pi-Camera/Native-camera/12MP-IMX708/#software

That covers the configuration needed for the Raspberry Pi to access the 12MP IMX708.

I followed all the steps at that link, but the camera still isn’t working. vcgencmd get_camera returns detected=0, selected=0, and nothing shows up in the Raspberry Pi interface. I’ve attached 3 screenshots showing the interface and the command output. I’ve also attached the arducam-bug-report.txt file so you can check the latest state.

Thanks for the bug report. Looking at it, the camera actually appears to be detected by the Pi and it can capture an image. vcgencmd get_camera isn’t the right way to check this camera — it doesn’t report correctly for the IMX708, so you can ignore those zeros.

Try these instead:

libcamera-still -t 0

And to confirm detection:

dmesg | grep imx708
ls /dev/video0

Let me know what those show. I think the hardware is actually being seen, and we just need to verify capture with libcamera.
