Hey everyone, I’m having trouble getting my Arducam 8.3MP Sony STARVIS 2 IMX585 (the ultra low light USB 3.0 camera module with the 16mm C-Mount lens) working on a Raspberry Pi 5.
The camera gets detected as video0 and video1 on the Pi, but whenever I try to record video or capture an image, I either get nothing on screen or the files come out completely empty.
I’ve already followed the official Arducam UVC Linux quick start guide (Start USB3 UVC Camera on Linux - Arducam Wiki) and I’ve double-checked that it’s plugged into a USB 3.0 port on the Pi 5. I’ve also tried a bunch of other tutorials I found online but nothing has worked so far.
The weird thing is the camera works perfectly fine on my Windows machine — it’s only the Raspberry Pi 5 where it refuses to cooperate. It shows up as a USB 3 device in lsusb but just won’t actually capture anything.
Sorry to hear you’re running into this. The first thing I’d suggest is making sure you’re going through the steps in our official Linux Quick Start Guide, which covers the software setup needed for UVC cameras on Linux, including Raspberry Pi:
Can you confirm which application you’re using to test the camera? Are you using qv4l2, VLC, or something else? And could you share what you see when you open the camera in that application — any error messages or unusual behavior?
Yeah, I’m using qv4l2. When I open it up, the camera shows up as B0498 on video0, which seems correct.
But here’s the strange part — when I click the capture button, the screen briefly flashes green for like half a second, and then video0 just disconnects from the app entirely. I have to go back and reselect it from the device list just to get it to show up again.
Same thing happens with any other app I try — the camera is listed as video0 and video1, but trying to preview, record, or capture just results in either a blank screen or an empty file. The green-screen-then-disconnect in qv4l2 is the most consistent symptom I can reproduce.
And just to reiterate, the camera works without any issues on my Windows machine. It’s specifically the Pi 5 where this is happening. Definitely connected to a USB 3.0 port too. Any ideas what’s going on here?
That green screen followed by the device disconnecting in qv4l2 is definitely not normal behavior, especially when the camera is being recognized correctly as B0498 on video0. Since the camera works fine on Windows, this points to something specific about the Pi 5’s USB stack or the UVC driver handling on that platform.
This is unusual enough that it warrants a closer look. Could you record a short video of what happens in qv4l2 — showing the device list, the green flash, and the disconnect — so we can see exactly what you’re seeing? That would help narrow things down.
I’ve also sent you details via private message for a remote support session if you’d prefer we take a look directly. In the meantime, if you could capture that video of the qv4l2 behavior, that would give us a good starting point for further investigation.
